I would like to encourage all of you to sign on to the CVCBD announcement list to receive safety information. This google group is simple to sign on to. Simply go to http://groups.google.com/group/CVCBD-Announcement?lnk=lr&hl=en and click "join this group" under the list title. You can also read the latest alerts without signing onto the list by visiting this page. If you join the group, the alerts will be delivered to your email inbox. Please do sign on to the above list. I will do my best to get information out to all of you as it comes in through early August. Here is today's posting: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following report is from today's (07/10/06) JHU security office: OFF-CAMPUS ARMED ROBBERY 700 Block West 33rd Street July 9, 2006 - 3:20 AM On July 9th at 3:20 AM, as two graduate students walked home from a convenience store, a mini-van stopped in front of them. Two unknown male suspects stepped out of it; one pointed a shotgun and demanded the students' property. The victims relinquished their wallets to the suspects who ran back to the purplish-blue van which then drove away eastbound on W. 33rd St. No injuries. Baltimore Police and Campus Officers responded. Investigation continuing. Description of Suspect: 1. Black male, 150-160 lbs., dark complexion, wearing a light T-shirt and carrying a shotgun. 2. White male, 5'8" tall, 150-160 lbs. 3 & 4. Two black males who remained inside the purplish-blue mini-van. * If you have any information regarding this incident please call the Northern District Police - -410-396-2455 or JHU Campus Safety and Security - - 410-516-4600. And this came in from the Abell community newslist. It's a great list to be on, as many security alerts are passed around on this list. Some non-security Abell Association items are also posted. If you're interested in joining, please visit http://abellimprovement.org/mailman/listinfo/members_abellimprovement.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Yesterday afternoon, there was an attempt to break into a house on the 300 block of East 33rd Street. Fortunately, the attempt failed. It is one more reminder that we all need to be vigilant and to make sure that our houses and apartments are locked both when we are away and when we are at home. Yesterday's crime comes after the arrest of Keith Ray, so even though the victim of yesterday's attempt thought that the perpetrator was the one responsible for a recent string of violent crimes, it appears to be either an unrelated or a copycat crime. I have attached below the article from today's Sun about the arrest of Mr. Ray. AIA is in the process of joining others led by City Council Member Mary Pat Clarke to ask that Mr. Ray be denied bail because there is just too much danger that he will kill someone if he is allowed back on the streets. But meanwhile, it is all too clear that other criminals are on the loose. We can be safe as long as we are sufficiently cautious. Steve. Sentementes Sun reporter July 10, 2006 Following a lead that took them to Baltimore County, city police detectives have arrested a man they say is responsible for a spree of brazen armed robberies, carjackings and home invasions over the past two months in Central and North Baltimore. Two detectives went Saturday night to the home of a woman they believed might know the suspect because a call was made to her on a cell phone shortly after it had been stolen. While the detectives were talking to her, a man entered the home, saw the police and fled, crashing through a sliding glass door, police said. Detectives chased and arrested the man. Police have charged the man in connection with three armed robberies in the city's Central District, and they believe he is the same man responsible for a series of home invasions, carjackings and armed robberies in the northern and northeastern parts of the city. Police identified the suspect as Keith Ray, 36, who was arrested in the first block of Comet Court in the Hillendale section. He was released from prison on parole in April after serving a 14-year sentence for armed robbery and handgun violations, police said. Officials said that Ray, whose last known address was in the 300 block of E. 21st St., has been charged in three robberies in the Central District. Maj. Michael Tabor, who oversees the detective units in each of the city's nine districts, said he had tasked "a slew" of detectives to work on the case as police began to see the patterns of a one-man crime wave emerging. A break in the case came when a cell phone stolen in a robbery was used to call the Baltimore County address, Tabor said. Police had obtained a subpoena to access cell-phone records and discovered the call made to a Comet Court address about 20 minutes after a robbery last month, Tabor said. "This suspect is going to be linked to several robberies across the city," Tabor said. Police believe that one man, wearing a mask or other coverings on his face, has been responsible for a wave of stickups - on the street and inside homes - in at least nine cases since May. At least one victim told police that the man admitted that he needed money to feed his drug habit. In one incident, he held up a 63-year-old law school professor outside his Guilford home, forced him to drive to an ATM, stole $1,200 from him, and then dropped him off in Reservoir Hill - without his pants. The robber also held up four women in their Guilford home, forcing one of them to go to a nearby ATM and a grocery store to obtain cash while he held her roommates at gunpoint. In Northeast Baltimore, a couple were carjacked outside their home at gunpoint and forced to drive to an ATM. Last week, a 27-year-old woman was the victim of a carjacking after she parked her car in a Charles Village alley in the 3000 block of St. Paul Street. The man ordered her to drive to an ATM and withdraw hundreds of dollars while he sat in the back seat with a gun pointed at her. He then dropped her off in downtown Baltimore. Maj. Michael Pristoop said detectives were working over the weekend to sift through evidence that might link the man to the incidents in his Northern District and in the Northeastern district. "We are investigating the probability that he is responsible for all, if not most, that occurred in the Northern District and in Ednor Gardens. We're looking at the strong possibility that he is involved in those cases and more throughout the city," Pristoop said. Tabor said that Detective James Schuler and Detective Sgt. Randy Dull believed they had found the right man when he walked in the door of the home on Comet Court and began acting nervously before he fled. They noticed tattoos on his arms that were similar to those described by robbery victims, he said. After the man was arrested, police found a driver's license from one of the victims in his pocket, Tabor said. Detectives have served search-and-seizure warrants on three locations in the city that they believe the suspect frequented, including an address in Ednor Gardens, where they searched a Jeep that they believe was used during the crimes. Inside the Jeep, Tabor said, detectives found a mask, bandanas, hosiery and a pellet gun that they believe was used in the crimes. gus.sentementes at baltsun.com Copyright C 2006, The Baltimore Sun | Get Sun home delivery Jeni Spevak Block Leader Coordinator Charles Village Community Benefits District 2301 N Charles St - Baltimore, MD 21218 410-235-4411 x16 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It was not a long meeting, but some good things came out of it: -There are still greening grants and funds available for block projects should you need them. Please contact us about these opportunities. -National Night Out is coming up on August 1st! Be sure to schedule your porch sit, block party or barbeque that evening. It's a Tuesday, and a big night for outdoor neighborhood events. There should be a gathering in the green space at 22nd and N Calvert, and one in the Abell green space as well. CVCA will likely be doing something and I will get that information out to you as it comes in. Let me know if you need assistance organizing something on your block! -As you may have heard, there have been some recent changes at the CVCBD. Janet Levine has left the organization and Odette Ramos is working as the interim Executive Director. Odette will be with us for three months to work on systems and transition to a new Executive Director which the board will be searching for very soon. Feel free to call and talk to me if you have input or questions. -Linda, our new office manager, is out on vacation. We have a temporary office manager named Tonya, and it is likely to be her cheery voice you'll hear if you call the office. Linda will be back at the end of August -My last day with the CVCBD is coming up in about three weeks. During the transition you may field questions to Bob Brinkman, the Harwood Community Liaison. Bob is at extension 13, and his email is bob at charlesvillage.org. A new Block Leader Coordinator will start with the CVCBD by mid-September. -I attended a Remington Assn Meeting (where I now live) last week and met Victor Mitchell of the Department of Public Works. He gave a presentation and stressed that the sewer project that is coming to the area will create a severe problem with rats in the area. If you are in the immediate area where the sewer work will be done, be sure to call 311 to talk to them about the rat problem. Have your neighbors call as well. These areas must be baited before work is done. -Barbara Henry of the 300 block of E 25th Street has had some success with getting the rat rub-out program to come to her block to bait. She obtained the consent form from the CVCBD office and had her neighbors fill them out. She then faxed the form in to the city- the fax number is on the form. If you would like some of these forms for your block, let me know! I can email it to you or we can make you copies here. If you need to fax them from here we can do that too, once your neighbors have completed the forms. The city has still not gotten out to do a walk-through with Barbara, but they are at least baiting for the rats. -And last but not least, I have a small gift to give to each and every one of you. If you are able to stop by the office some time, I would love to be able to give it to you in person. If not I will stop by your home and drop if off or at least leave it for you where I can. I probably won't get the chance to drop them off before the first week of August. If you attended the meeting, you have already received your gift. They were made possible by a grant from Baltimore Neighborhoods, Inc. Let me know if there are any questions or needs. Thank you for your continued dedication to the neighborhood! We've been getting phone calls and Bob and Wes are compiling statistics to present to the police for added partolling. There has been at least a 50% increase in the area since the spring. Be sure to park in well-lit areas and take everything out of your car. After I was broken into I took everything out of my glove box and left it open at night so folks could see there was nothing of interest in my car. Also, there was a stabbing in Harwood this week, in the 400 block of Whitridge. It occurred in the early morning hours of the 18th. It was a double stabbing, and there was one fatality. No other information is known at this time. I am not sure if it was in a house or on the street. Each month the Northern Police District has an open meeting where the public can come to voice concerns. These occur every third Wednesday from 7-9pm. The next one is coming up tonight, at 7pm at 2201 W. Coldspring Lane (just west of I83). They will be reviewing the strategic plan. ANNOUNCEMENTS Trash will be picked up early this week due to the heat. They will start their pick up at 6:00am. Please have your trash out by 5:00am, or the night before with a tight-fitting lid on your can. -------------------------------------------------------- I have a gift for each of you. Those of you who made the meeting received mugs printed with the CVCBD logo and a message of gratitude. These mugs are yours, and I would love it if you would come by the office to pick them up. I will deliver them to you if you can give me a time when you will be home. I can not leave them on porches- they will get stolen. These mugs were created using the grant that I was given from Baltimore Neighborhoods, Inc. This grant had to be used to recongize area volunteers, and they are being given to block leaders, association officers and other active residents in the benefits district. Please understand that this money was extra and had to be used for this purpose. Nothing was taken from the block leader program or any other program to create these mugs. I would love for each of you to have one to commemorate your service in the community. Come by the office or let me know when I can stop by to visit you. If you have not given me your hours please do so immediately. Thank you!
