29th St. ramp to JFX may not stay closed as long as planned

The closing of the 29th Street ramp onto the southbound Jones Falls
Expressway, scheduled to begin Monday, may not last as long as
originally planned, city transportation officials said yesterday.

After protests from residents angry that the closure could take up to
two years, Alfred H. Foxx, director of the city's transportation
department, said yesterday he hopes to have the ramp reopened by the
spring or summer of next year.

The city wants to close the ramp because an exit-only ramp is being
created just to the south, creating a potential hazard. The interstate
has been undergoing a two-year reconstruction and widening project
that began in November and has resulted in the temporary loss of a
lane of traffic in each direction.
