[Chat] Re: [Discussion] zoo closing?

It was probably about a year ago that I got a
solicitation in the mail to donate money to the zoo,
but it sounds like their fundraising efforts fell
short and that the propositions that passed didn't
include the zoo. It's a shame that the "no tax" people
don't seem to realize that "no tax" means "no service"
-- no public schools, road maintenance, zoos,
libraries, museums, food safety inspectors, police,
border patrols, wastewater treatment, .... What ever
happened to concern for the common good?

Over the summer I volunteered with a bunch of folks
from the Mass Transit Administration's Citizens
Advisory Council (MTA CAC) to create an alternate
Baltimore Rail Plan to the one that was developed last
year (and will become only a Bus Plan if the Governor
and his Transportation Secretary get their way).
Anyway, one of the subjects that came up is that the
current Metro Subway doesn't have optimum signage to
promote use of the Metro and the attractions. For
example, the Mondawmin stop doesn't have any signs to
let people know that it is very close to the Zoo --
close enough to walk, and not far by bus.

The MTA CAC plan advocates Metro Subway, rather than
Light Rail or Bus Rapid Transit. If anyone would like
to be on the mailing list for the final copy of the
report, just let me know. It should be out in a week
or so.

Also, for folks that like to repeat that things were
better in the '50s and 60's, there's an interesting
document called "What's Wrong with the GDP?" at
http://dieoff.org/page11.htm . Finally, I forget where
I've read it, but companies used to pay quite a lot
more in taxes than they do now. The chant for "no
taxes" helps them a lot more than it does ordinary
people, who, for the most part, weren't paying their
own way before.
