[Chat] FYI: Science should be taught in a science class, religion should be taught in a religion class

Apparently, at least two members of the Cecil County
Board of Education in Elkton, MD are having a problem
understanding the basic idea that science should be
taught in a science class, and religion should be
taught in a religion class. See:

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/health/bal-md.evolve15feb15,1,6826196.story?coll=bal-local-headlines

There are approximately 500 different stories of
creation among all the religions of the world, and a
class just on that topic might be extremely
interesting, but it still doesn't belong in a science
class. Any argument to the contrary merely displays:
1) a fundamental ignorance of what science is, or 2) a
deliberate and malicious attempt to confuse and
corrupt other people's thought processes.

Scientists can be religious; many, including myself,
are quite fascinated by religion and are very involved
in their faiths. Also, people, who presently don't
understand what science is, can learn if they wish.
However, it is essential to begin with correct
definitions and accurate information. Otherwise, like
children who are severely malnourished at critical
growth stages, they will never be able to stand up
straight.

As an example: a doctor may pray for assistance in
treating a patient, and a patient may pray to be
healed, but if the treatment is proven to be harmful
by scientific evidence, then the doctor is punished,
regardless of his or her faith.

Logically, it should work the other way too, so that a
patient who is healed after treatment would attribute
the credit to science and the skill of the doctor.
But, most scientists and doctors prefer to be humble;
most do not quibble and are not insulted when those
recoveries are called "miracles."

That is the beauty of science -- it *does* encourage
questions and self-doubt, and it *does not* prevent us
from one day finding hard evidence of the divine. But
until that day, "intelligent design" should not be
taught in a science class.
