I am sending the news article., below, to alert people to/about Mel's
Antiques, which is in Fell's Point at 1634 E Lombard St.

This business is notorious for receiving stolen goods to sell-cast iron
urns, stained glass windows, mantelpieces, metal grates-old items that come
from CV-type houses throughout the city.

If you have something stolen, check out this store, for your item might be
there-just as IND's iron gates were.

Cast-iron grates stolen from school recovered

August 30, 2006

Two large cast-iron grates that were stolen a week ago from the front doors
of the Institute of Notre Dame in East Baltimore have been recovered from an
antique shop after a former student spotted them being wheeled in a grocery
cart by two men on East Monument Street.

The principal notified police after Friday's sighting of the grates, which
bear the IND initials, said Sister Hilda Marie Southerland, a teacher and
caretaker at the 158-year-old school in the 900 block of Aisquith St. who
reported them missing Aug. 22.

Police said a check of area pawn and antique shops led to the recovery of
the grates at Mel's Antiques in the 1600 block of E. Lombard St. It was not
known how much the shop paid for them, police said, adding that an arrest
warrant was expected to be issued for a suspect in the theft. The owner of
Mel's could not be reached for comment yesterday evening.
