I don't think this service is in Baltimore.

This service was held last Saturday at Historic Oakland in Columbia.  The room was packed by 11:05 and at least 30 people had to stand in the back of the room and another 20 or so outside the door to the room.  It was a very Christian service with a number of readings from the Bible and several prayers.  I did not get to meet the priest/minister who presided.  After those procedings, different people were invited to share thoughts about Arjay.  These included his brother William, several nieces, and several friends, including myself.  One gentleman from Phoenix shared some very amusing and insightful descriptions of things Arjay did during his workday - including taking naps at lunch.  I hope this gentleman will share his comments with Dawna so she can incorporate them into her upcoming article.  A few people from CV attended:
Tweefie Millspaugh, Didon Pachner, Arjay's friend and neighbor Roger, Bob Finn, Valerie Griffin, and perhaps others I did not recognize.  I was really impressed with the total number of people who attended.

  Dear Friends of Arjay/Richard Johnson,

  Richard Temple Johnson aka "Arjay" was my uncle (my mother's brother-in-law.)
  He was very dear to me and like a father. He would often refer to himself as "Tio Ricardo" (in his best latino accent.) 

  We're all very sad and are still in shock and disbelief that he's suddenly gone from our lives (physically, as he'll always be with us in spirit.) I feel especially sorry for his daughter Anne Johnson, a young woman of only 21 years. She's doing okay but will need a lot of love and support.

  Uncle Rick's brother, Bill, (Dr. William R. Johnson of Columbia/Ellicott City, MD) found Arjay and this has been very hard on him. They were very close. Arjay is also survived by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. William R. Johnson, Sr, of Ellicott City (they're in their 90's,) his daughter Anne and ex-wife, Rebecca Johnson, of Guilford, and my other aunt, Louise Morgan of Towson.

  Uncle Rick was a Mechanical Engineer with Phoenix International in Largo, Maryland. He was only 67 years old. Apparently he was very sick with what we think was the flu. He was last seen by his friend Roger on Sunday December 28th. Bill discoverd him on Wednesday December 31st. We've been told by the medical examiner that he died of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. He was cremated on Friday January 2nd. 

  I want to thank those of you who inquired about his memorial service. Initially the service was to be on Saturday, January 24th due to existing weekend travel plans that Bill had for the subsequent weekends following Uncle Rick's death.

  I received an E-mail from Brad Schlegel regarding the service on Saturday January 31st. The details are as follows:

  From Baltimore:

  And, thanks to John Spurrier for the photo of Uncle Rick with his conga drum. There are so many things that I'd like to write but I don't know any of you and am not comfy with going into all of my thoughts. Suffice it to say that I loved my uncle and I'll miss him so much. He was a kind soul deep down despite his occasional "grumpy old man" routine (and that's meant in a light-hearted way.)

My husband and I just shopped at ALDI for the first time on Sunday. It was great. We went to the one on Route 40 because I wasn't aware that there are stores in Baltimore. 
 
Yes, I recommend bringing your own bags!

I was never to excited about their selections or brands. Unless their 
inventory has changed there wasn't any organic  or additive free 
products.

Synopsis

Lebanon War veteran Joseph Cedar (CAMPFIRE) directs a harrowing, often
haunting account of Israel's 2000 withdrawal from Lebanon and the Beaufort
mountain fortress. Built by Crusaders in the 12th century, the fort was
captured by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in 1982 at the start of the
Lebanon War. Eighteen years later, increasing criticism at home and abroad
has led to Israel's decision to withdraw completely from Lebanon. Charged
with managing the fort's defense and its evacuation is 22-year-old commander
Liraz Liberti (Oshri Cohen). Eager to lead but emotionally untested, Liraz
must maintain his bare-bones troop's discipline between bouts of
claustrophobic tedium and increasing harassment by Hezbollah mortar attacks.

Cinema Sundays continues its 44th series with Beaufort. Nominated for Best
foreign film, winner of Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival and winner
of numerous Israeli awards, This meditative and thoughtful document on war
(88% positive on RottenTomatos.com) should be a welcome addition to Cinema
Sundays. Screened to great success at the Baltimore Jewish Film Festival I
have w anted to bring Beaufort to Cinema Sundays for quite a while and I am
delighted that we have the opportunity. Needless to say current events make
this story from almost three decades ago ever more poignant.

Right now our fabulous guest speaker is TBA but I am hard at work to find
the perfect Beaufort speaker. I want to thank Mike Giuliano for sitting in
for me last week and also Max Weiss for speaking. 

And now some important bagel news for CSC members and guests. Sadly our
bagel provider went out of business a couple of weeks ago and we have
switched to a new baker! If by chance your favorite bagel isn't present this
Sunday we are working to fix the problem. Bear with us during these

stimulating, updated, yet official description.


Precisely at 9:45 on a given Sunday morning, while birds chirp in the most
musical manner, the doors at the Charles Theatre swing open to reveal a
lobby replete with tasty bagels, hot coffee and friendly volunteers ready to
serve them to you. All of our volunteers have been pre-tested for a complete
lack of morning grouchiness and provide the nicest service. 

Guarded carefully by the enormous lobby penguin (which desperately needs a
name) bagels, coffee and scintillating yet improvised conversation continues
until 10:30. At precisely 10:30:07 some brief opening remarks by yours truly
will be followed by a few remarks from our guest speaker who will never do
either of two things. First he or she will never ever give away the plot of
the film and second the speaker will not go on too long.especially if the
film is one of those 2.5 hour Soviet era documentaries on the Romance of the
Seven Tractor Drivers. 

Following a brief admonition not to talk during the film and a
recommendation to sublet your cell phone to a starving student from the
third world the screening will take place. Upon completion of the screening
a robust question and answer session featuring our guest speaker will
include your fascinating observations upon the recently screened movie.

This flowery description barely describes the sublime joy and excitement
which is Cinema Sundays. If there is a better way to spend Sunday mornings
it simply hasn't occurred to me..yet!

A couple of days ago, I received a bill from the city saying that I had not paid my Special Benefits District surcharge (for the CVCBD), and that I had until the end of the month to pay up. Since I had already paid my CVCBD bill for the year, I figured this was a mistake. When I called to ask about it, I was told that this bill had indeed been sent out in error. Apparently, many homeowners in the city's Special Benefits Districts, including the CVCBD, received a similar, erroneous bill. If you received a similar bill from the city (and your CVCBD surtax is paid up), disregard it. The city will be sending out retractions explaining the error. A short article about this billing error appeared in today's Baltimore Sun, the text of which is pasted below.Paul BurkBaltimore sends out tax bill notices with errorsFebruary 11, 2009Baltimore City officials acknowledged yesterday sending erroneous tax bill notices to property owners in the Midtown, Charles Village and Waterfront Management districts. City officials anticipate the errors will be corrected by March. The errors are limited to liens for special benefit district taxes levied on properties in those neighborhoods.

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a

during this difficult time.  Cubans share how they transitioned from a
highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic
methods of farming and local, urban gardens.  It is an unusual look
into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis, which they call
"The Special Period."  The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil,
a term for the time in our history when world oil production will
reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever.  Cuba, the only
country that has faced such a crisis ? the massive reduction of fossil
fuels ? is an example of options and hope.

I am in the belief that unless the rodent is in a cage like pet mice, pet rats and their cousins the hamsters and gerbils. They are vermin to be dealt with.

I try to use natural and organic methods of pest control due to my sensativity and the fact that I have pets.?Also my friends bring their children to my home when they visit.

I only use chemicals in the worse case scenerio.

Sorry for taking so long to post this bit of info.

Couple of weeks ago my Mother went to court to give testimony in regards to the person who was caught stealing packages in the area. According to her, they asked her if it was her package, if she gave permission to the individual to get the package etc. 
?
The court date and hearing is going to be on March 31st. I am sorry I dont have any? more info. Hopefully I will know more at the end of March. 
?
So far Iam still having my packages sent to my office "just in case" 
?
I also wanted to thank the neighbors who gave my mother a ride back home from the court house. It was very thoughtful and very much appreciated. 
?

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone has observed a man who drives a silver volvo "hanging around" on the 2900 Block of Guilford.  Sometime he double parks and other times he actually parks, but has been observed for the last couple of weeks just standing around his car or on the sidewalk.  

He has been observed eating food out of cans and drinking water from a very large plastic water bottle.  

He is a white man, about 5'6 to 5'9 with graying hair and glasses.  He has been wearing the same clothes since first observed a couple of weeks ago.  He also is behaving peculiarly.

 

He seems to be there most of the time when I drive by.   I was alerted to his presence by a friend who lives in the 2900 block of Guilford and we have called the police a number of times to see what the story is.  He never seems to be there when they show up. 

 

If anyone has any information about this individual or if you see him, call the police so that we can determine who he is and why he is in the area it would be a great relief.

both Saturday and Sunday. ?I have a set of GPS receivers to loan out
to people, and I'll teach all skills needed to improve the map of
Baltimore.

Why? ?Because all the existing maps are closed, expensive, and out of
date. ?Because this open street map is free, open, and as current as
you want it to be. ?Because if you want to write a mapping program, or
present your data against a map, you have no good starting point.
Let's fix that.

OpenStreetMap is a database of geospatial information, licensed under
the CC-BY-SA license, and is managed by a UK non-profit foundation
(I'll let you guess the name.) ?(hint: it's not "OpenStreetMap
Rumbottom").

Hello, neighbors,

Kathleen and I got a digital thermostat installed, and
it's been a big help.  Because it turns the heat on and
off automatically, we think we're less tempted than we
were in the past to crank it up too much when the house
got cold.  We got a BGE bill today, and our natural gas
usage was down ten percent over February of last
year, even though the average temperature was
two degrees colder.  Just wanted to share that.

what does he look like? Are the tags from MD? There are many homeless 
people who have cars. They are forced to live in their cars. I 
volunteer at 'Heart's place' shelter. I have met so many interesting

No Judy I haven't.  But I figured that possibly by posting this, someone who is familiar with these type of interactions and that may have some helpful advice to offer him might.  I don't have either of these things to offer.

men's pants sizes 34-38.  since the season is closing soon they won't 
need any more clothes. Winter socks heavy duty. NO dress clothes. Need 
clothes that are warm.

I am in the belief that unless the rodent is in a cage like pet mice, pet rats and their cousins the hamsters and gerbils. They are vermin to be dealt with. 
 
I try to use natural and organic methods of pest control due to my sensativity and the fact that I have pets. Also my friends bring their children to my home when they visit. 
 
 
I only use chemicals in the worse case scenerio.

Peppermint oil is best used indoors as a rodent deterrent.  I?ve used it effectively in quantity with spearmint oil to deter mice.  You need high concentrations.  The amount required is very noticeable to the human nose.   The fragrance dissipates quickly outdoors, and the larger rodents still go about their business.  A bed of peppermint is a reasonable approach if you have an area that can be dedicated to its invasive habits.  In combination with spearmint , it can help during the growing season.  
 
Neighbors used predator urine (available online and from several types of predators at Valley View Farms) to drive out a rodent infestation from their yard.  Rodents emigrated to other yards, which simply spread the problem.  The correct way to use such a deterrent is to diligently bait the rodents until they are gone.  Then this deterrent may be used to keep new infestations from returning.  
 
I hope that everyone in the neighborhood will join in the campaign to keep the neighborhood very clean and the urban rats very unwelcome (yes this does mean a bit of work).  I realize that some will argue about rats? rights to multiply, but humans and wild rats are simply not compatible from a health standpoint.  This is an ?us or them? level of hazard.  Please don?t wait until your friend is at death?s door in Union Memorial to believe the seriousness of the rodent matter.
