It has been over 15 years since a community-based hardware store has been in the Greater Waverly area.  I encourage you to pursue this opportunity and hope you will hear from other members of the community, as well.  Have you been in touch with the Waverly Main Street Coordinator, Laura Kindseth?

I shop at the Home Depot on Perring Pkwy and get plants at the Waverly Farmer's market and another small nursery on Walther Blvd - Walther Gardens.  there are a few small hardware stores in Hampden, but none left on Greenmount Avenue, where there had been two as recently as 1993.

I'm curious where everyone currently shops for their hardware and
housewares items?  Where are you buying things like plant pots, mulch,

Hi Gina,

I agree with Brad.  It would be great to have you in the neighborhood.  I
know that many of the homeowners on my block are always renovating or
updating their homes to some extent.  I certainly have a long list of
intended renovations and upgrades.  Like Brad, I currently shop at the Home
Depot on Perring Parkway but would gladly switch to a local business.

I  remember 3 mom and pop hardware stores on Greenmount Av. Love to see 
another one in the neighborhood, but not at the expense of someone's 
safety. That location is isolated, thanks in part to the poor design of 
Giant. Let's not forget  that the store manager of the blockbuster was 
murdered inside his store. Another 7-11 is not needed at 31st & 
Charles. A hardware store is.There are 2 empty spaces at 31st& Chas.

I also remember 3 hardware stores: Hardware Fair (which was not mom and 
pop as far as I was aware) next to the Boulevard Theater, Hoover's on 
the 3100 or 3200 block of Greenmount (and Mr. Hoover could come to ones 
house to repair an old lock), and Boulevard Hardware on 31st or 32nd 
just west of Greenmount.  Hoover's closed (its owners were elderly and 
probably did not have kids who wanted to take over the business), and 
two men who had just recently bought Boulevard from its previous owner 
then bought Hardware Fair, closed the other store, and opened as 
Boulevard Hardware Fair where Hardware Fair had been.  Hechingers, a 
regional chain which had opened a store in Northwood where Hecht Company 
had been, closed according to the Sun if I recall correctly because of 
poor management and inability to compete with Home Depot on prices 
(Lowe's came to Maryland much more recently).  So now we have Home Depot 
and Lowe's in suburbia and a few small local hardware stores.

But the small hardware stores can compete despite higher prices because 
we can walk to them (especially good for those of us without cars) and 
because they universally give better service than Home Depot or Lowe's.  
While I will be glad during daylight hours to patronize a store where 
Blockbuster was (and the murder occurred at night when people with sense 
would not go there), I agree with Judy that it would be far better if a 
hardware store were located in the JHU-owned building at 31st and 
Charles; we do not need another 7-11.

Another great location, if it can be gotten, would be the old Uncle 
Lee's Restaurant across Greenmount from where Boulevard Hardware Fair 
was.  As I am sure that Gina knows, the City has definitely been 
interested in trying to get an Ace Hardware there and has been trying to 
pressure the owner of Uncle Lee's to sell the property if he is not 
going to put it to use.

So I encourage Gina to open an Ace Hardware at any one of the locations 
mentioned.  We definitely need a hardware store in the neighborhood.  We 
really need to get a collection of good stores and restaurants on and 
near Greenmount (i.e. at locations such as the old post office where 
Blockbuster was and on the 3300 block of Greenmount where Uncle Lee's 
was) that will attract neighborhood and outside people in sufficient 
numbers so that the entire area will no longer seem so seedy and feel so 
unsafe that people do not want to go there.  Her store can help a lot at 
either Waverly Main Street location, and her store at Charles and 31st 
can keep that area from going downhill.

Years ago, I was told by someone in the hardware business (it might have 
been one of the owners of Boulevard Hardware Fair) that the hardware 
business is counter-cyclical because people who are un or under employed 
like to fix up their homes during their spare time.  So despite the 
economic mess, this may be an excellent time to open a hardware store.  
Good luck to Gina!

BTW, when I need hardware now, I take the 8 and 9 buses to Lowe's.  So 
despite the fact that Lowe's is cheaper than Ace will be, I certainly 
would find it preferable to use an Ace Hardware in the neighborhood.

I know Gina's hardware store well in DC, having been a Logan resident for 15
years.they are wonderful, and always have that odd item you need, with
friendly faces.  (Although I wish she would sell my Logan Circle book at the
counter!)

 

How about the abandoned Hollywood video store on 25th Street, across from
the safeway?  It has nice parking!  If a smaller store is needed, the
copycat building on the corner of 25th and Charles is now vacant (copycat
moved a few blocks south).  That site would really make for a lovely
restaurant, too.

I also remember 3 hardware stores: Hardware Fair (which was not mom and pop
as far as I was aware) next to the Boulevard Theater, Hoover's on the 3100
or 3200 block of Greenmount (and Mr. Hoover could come to ones house to
repair an old lock), and Boulevard Hardware on 31st or 32nd just west of
Greenmount.  Hoover's closed (its owners were elderly and probably did not
have kids who wanted to take over the business), and two men who had just
recently bought Boulevard from its previous owner then bought Hardware Fair,
closed the other store, and opened as Boulevard Hardware Fair where Hardware
Fair had been.  Hechingers, a regional chain which had opened a store in
Northwood where Hecht Company had been, closed according to the Sun if I
recall correctly because of poor management and inability to compete with
Home Depot on prices (Lowe's came to Maryland much more recently).  So now
we have Home Depot and Lowe's in suburbia and a few small local hardware
stores.

But the small hardware stores can compete despite higher prices because we
can walk to them (especially good for those of us without cars) and because
they universally give better service than Home Depot or Lowe's.  While I
will be glad during daylight hours to patronize a store where Blockbuster
was (and the murder occurred at night when people with sense would not go
there), I agree with Judy that it would be far better if a hardware store
were located in the JHU-owned building at 31st and Charles; we do not need
another 7-11.

Another great location, if it can be gotten, would be the old Uncle Lee's
Restaurant across Greenmount from where Boulevard Hardware Fair was.  As I
am sure that Gina knows, the City has definitely been interested in trying
to get an Ace Hardware there and has been trying to pressure the owner of
Uncle Lee's to sell the property if he is not going to put it to use.

So I encourage Gina to open an Ace Hardware at any one of the locations
mentioned.  We definitely need a hardware store in the neighborhood.  We
really need to get a collection of good stores and restaurants on and near
Greenmount (i.e. at locations such as the old post office where Blockbuster
was and on the 3300 block of Greenmount where Uncle Lee's was) that will
attract neighborhood and outside people in sufficient numbers so that the
entire area will no longer seem so seedy and feel so unsafe that people do
not want to go there.  Her store can help a lot at either Waverly Main
Street location, and her store at Charles and 31st can keep that area from
going downhill.

Years ago, I was told by someone in the hardware business (it might have
been one of the owners of Boulevard Hardware Fair) that the hardware
business is counter-cyclical because people who are un or under employed
like to fix up their homes during their spare time.  So despite the economic
mess, this may be an excellent time to open a hardware store.  Good luck to
Gina!

BTW, when I need hardware now, I take the 8 and 9 buses to Lowe's.  So
despite the fact that Lowe's is cheaper than Ace will be, I certainly would
find it preferable to use an Ace Hardware in the neighborhood.

in the Greater Waverly area.  I encourage you to pursue this 
opportunity and

Have you
been in touch with the Waverly Main Street Coordinator, Laura 
Kindseth?
 
I shop at the Home Depot on Perring Pkwy and get plants at the 
Waverly
Farmer's market and another small nursery on Walther Blvd - Walther
Gardens.  there are a few small hardware stores in Hampden, but none 
left on
Greenmount Avenue, where there had been two as recently as 1993.

I shop at Lowe's in Timonium and Bel Air (I go to a vet in Bel Air),
Courtland Hardware in Bel Air,
Home Depot on Perring Parkway, and Falkenhan's in Hampden.  When we 
first bought our house in 2000, it came with one skeleton key for the 
outer front door (it has more substantial locks on the inner front door).
I went to Falkenhan's and they opened a big drawer full of keys,
picked out three likely candidates and told me to bring back
the ones that didn't work (which I did).  I also remember a trip
to Home Depot when they couldn't figure out what kind of paint
would be acceptable for painting my radiator.  The guy helping
me couldn't seem to grasp the whole radiator concept.

I also buy plants at the Farmer's Market, and Greenfields, and
some gardening supplies at Mill Valley Garden Center next
to the dump on Sisson St.  Cheryl, who runs the place, is super
nice.

I would definitely patronize a local hardware store.  I shop
at the Giant frequently but the other locations mentioned
would also be OK.

Don't forget the empty, former 33rd st blockbuster.  Maybe someone can  
negotiate with Mr. David, who has been trying to sell that who;e block.

Hello,

Yes, Rick did die of what the doctors believe to be an Aortic Aneurysm.  He was found in his home by family members and police on 12/31 after he had not been seen for about 3 days.  This is a very sad and tragic event as Rick was a vital and visible member of the Charles Village community.  I will miss his presence and friendship deeply.

Rick's story more than ever points out to me how important it is for connection and keeping watch for our neighbors.  I am struck at how easily we become isolated in what seems a busy and social community.  As Charles Villagers we have the opportunity to build these relationships.  I hope I remember this when the sting of Rick's death begins to fade.

Today my mother called me because a Police officer? went to our house to drop off an open package that was addressed to her.

He asked if she knew what the contents of the box was and what should be in the box, and if she was expecting a delivery.

She only told him that hse was expecting a box from her cousin, with candy and come caribbien spices. He went tot he trunk of his vehicle (According to her the vehicle was a police car but does not remember if was a city police car or county or state) She says he was wearing a uniform. 
He asked her for her name and birth date. (I find that rather odd) 
?
He gave her the package and then left telling her that he would return at 1pm to get a report.
?
I may be paraniod but this sets off my "Spider senses" on many levels. 1) why would a cop just drop off the package? 2) why did he only ask for her name and age?
?
I plan on staying home tomorrow to see if this "cop" returns. 
?
Any ideas? Suggestions? Theories? 
?

We have had several packages stolen off of our porch. So today, greg 
sees a guy carrying a package, and he dropped it in our alley (we live 
at 2711n calvert). the box was to 26?? Calvert St. (wanda). So greg 
called the police and followed the guy to find him looking for packages 
  on the 2700 block of St Paul. He went house to house. The police came 
and questioned him and let him go. Greg showed the officer the dumped 
package and the officer took it.

The good news is that the officer is aware of who the person is, they 
just need to catch him in the act.

and Jonathan Walther and to David Hill at the CVCBD Safety and asked for their 
help on what has become a chronic problem.  I know that we should be careful 
not to leave packages on our porches but I am concerned that someone or more 
thieves are following the Fed Ex or UPS truck looking for packages.  These 
thieves must be caught.  This issue will be discussed at the upcoming CVCBD Safety 
Advisory Council meeting which is attended by both officers.

We have had several packages stolen off of our  porch. So today, greg
sees a guy carrying a package, and he dropped it in  our alley (we live
at 2711n calvert). the box was to 26?? Calvert St.  (wanda). So greg
called the police and followed the guy to find him looking  for packages
on the 2700 block of St Paul. He went house to house.  The police came
and questioned him and let him go. Greg showed the officer  the dumped
package and the officer took it.

The good news is that  the officer is aware of who the person is, they
just need to catch him in  the act.

The title of astrophysicist Livio's latest wide-ranging science survey
is a teaser since God rarely makes an appearance; along with the
French astronomer Laplace, Livio has no need of that
hypothesis. Rather, Livio (The Golden Ratio) is concerned with the
contentious question: is mathematics a human invention? Or is it the
intricate design of the universe that we are slowly discovering?
Scientists in past centuries have argued for the latter, Platonist
position. In the last 50 years, however, many scientists, calling into
question the whole idea of scientific discovery, maintain that we have

ratio, which has fascinated Western mathematicians for millennia and

I'd be concerned about the cold also. Maybe some food will help the dog  
trust  more. Has Vonnie been notified yet?  Dog sounds scared.  Judy

The dog wandered off an hour or two after I wrote my e-mail yesterday.? But one neighbor had already called Vonnie earlier.? And another neighbor said he would contact one family he thought the dog might belong to.? That's all I know.

Dear Friends of Arjay/Richard Johnson,

Richard Temple Johnson aka "Arjay" was my uncle (my mother's brother-in-law.)
He was very dear to me and like a father. He would often refer to himself as "Tio Ricardo" (in his best latino accent.) 

We're all very sad and are still in shock and disbelief that he's suddenly gone from our lives (physically, as he'll always be with us in spirit.) I feel especially sorry for his daughter Anne Johnson, a young woman of only 21 years. She's doing okay but will need a lot of love and support.

Uncle Rick's brother, Bill, (Dr. William R. Johnson of Columbia, MD)?found?Arjay and this has been very hard on him. They were very close. Arjay is also survived by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. William R. Johnson, Sr, of Ellicott City (they're in their 90's,) his daughter Anne and ex-wife, Rebecca Johnson, of Guilford, and my other aunt, Louise Morgan of Towson.

Uncle Rick was a Mechanical Engineer with Phoenix International in Laurel, Maryland. He was only 67 years old. Apparently he was very sick with what we think was the flu. He was last seen by his friend Roger on Sunday December 28th. Bill discoverd him on Wednesday December 31st. We've been told by the medical examiner that he died of an abdominal aortic aneurysm.?He was cremated on Friday January 2nd.. 

I want to thank those of you who inquired about his memorial service. Initially the service was to be on Saturday, January 24th due to existing weekend travel plans that Bill had for the subsequent weekends following Uncle Rick's death.

I received an E-mail from William Schlegel regarding the service on Saturday January 31st. The details are as follows:

There are so many things that I'd like to write but I don't know any of you and am not comfy with going into all of my thoughts. Suffice it to say that I loved my uncle and I'll miss him so much. He was a kind soul deep down despite his "grumpy old man" routine.

Indeed it was a legitiment Police Officer and there is currently an investigation regarding he mail thefts of the area. That is all the officer told me when he returned the next day to give my mother her copy of her statement report.

I was also told to inform my neighbors that if they are expecting a package and it it stated to be delivered yet you never got it, to notify the Post Office asap.

Everyone:

I brought up this issue of the package thefts at the CVCBD Safety Advisory 
Council meeting on January 14 and Officer O' Donnell reported that the thief had 
been caught and arrested based upon the information the residents had 
supplied the police.

Hello Everyone,
  I'm not sure if you've noticed but on 27Th and St. Paul a woman that lives on the second floor has been letting her large dog poop in the patch of grass/tree area and does not picking it up. I believe she is a renter and maybe not on this chat list.  I'm sure it is not just her but I have personally seen her at 6:45am without a poop bag and letting her dog poop in that area more then once.  The pile is growing larger and larger and I think it may be at the point of being a little unsafe.  Does anyone know how to handle this.  My second floor tenant takes the bus everyday to work and came home completely upset about this.
Let me know if you have any advice.

Dear Friends of Arjay/Richard Johnson,

Richard Temple Johnson aka "Arjay" was my uncle (my mother's brother-in-law.)
He was very dear to me and like a father. He would often refer to himself as "Tio Ricardo" (in his best latino accent.) 

We're all very sad and are still in shock and disbelief that he's suddenly gone from our lives (physically, as he'll always be with us in spirit.) I feel especially sorry for his daughter Anne Johnson, a young woman of only 21 years. She's doing okay but will need a lot of love and support.

Uncle Rick's brother, Bill, (Dr. William R. Johnson of Columbia/Ellicott City, MD) found Arjay and this has been very hard on him. They were very close. Arjay is also survived by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. William R. Johnson, Sr, of Ellicott City (they're in their 90's,) his daughter Anne and ex-wife, Rebecca Johnson, of Guilford, and my other aunt, Louise Morgan of Towson.

Uncle Rick was a Mechanical Engineer with Phoenix International in Largo, Maryland. He was only 67 years old. Apparently he was very sick with what we think was the flu. He was last seen by his friend Roger on Sunday December 28th. Bill discoverd him on Wednesday December 31st. We've been told by the medical examiner that he died of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. He was cremated on Friday January 2nd. 

I want to thank those of you who inquired about his memorial service. Initially the service was to be on Saturday, January 24th due to existing weekend travel plans that Bill had for the subsequent weekends following Uncle Rick's death.

I received an E-mail from Brad Schlegel regarding the service on Saturday January 31st. The details are as follows:

He was a kind soul deep down despite his occasional "grumpy old man" routine (and that's meant in a light-hearted way.)

The elderly woman who lives in the basement apartment next door to me has
been hospitalized because of a liver condition.

 

She will not be able to return to her apartment and will be going into
assisted living.  (Right now she's in Future Care, 2700 N. Charles.)

 

A friend up the block and I are going through her things for her and plan to
give away/store etc. various items. 

 

She has furniture and many books, none of which is valuable.

 

She wants one of us to have durable power of attorney.

 

 

Two questions:

Does anyone know if there is a FREE online form I can download and print for
the power of attorney?  I haven't been able to find one.

 

Nothing the woman owns is valuable, still, the two of us hate to let the
landlord throw it all in the trash.  Does anyone know of a group or person
that we can contact to come over SOON to take what they want?

for legal self-help information.  Their website is nolo.com .
Their book 101 Legal Forms for Personal Use has
a form for a limited power of attorney for finance.
This book costs $18 for downloadable softcopy.
I couldn't find a general purpose durable power of
attorney form on their website.

I've used Nolo Press books on Special Needs trusts
and social security disability.  They were of high
quality and quite usable.
