Do folks know anything about Fire House #31 being closed? Supposedly for
repairs?

The station is the closest one to Charles Village. It is located at 3123
Greenmount Ave. The building is currently vacant and there is no evidence
of any work being done on it. The building is 100 years old. The City has
$100,000 of the more than $2 million needed to repair it. They hope to get
$2 million from the Federal government. They will be applying to Homeland
Security for the funds but competition is tight as there is only $210
million available nationwide for Fire Station construction grants. So,
there is no guarantee.

The fire company that had been housed there is now located at East 25th
Street and Kirk Avenue. This greatly increases the amount of time it takes
for fire truck to get to Charles Village. According to Mapquest the old
station is .4 miles from 30th and Calvert and the new one is 1.2 miles away.

There is an open house at the old station on Saturday, July 18th from 10 AM
to 2 PM at 3123 Greenmount Ave. Fire Chief James Clack will be there and you
can take a tour of the station and see what their "wish list" of furnishings
are. No doubt a strong community presence at this event will increase the
likelihood of the station being re-opened as they will see the community
cares.
