Message-ID: I'd say Go Obama Hedge funds become the villains in Chrysler's ongoing saga _Lita Epstein_ (http://www.dailyfinance.com/bloggers/lita-epstein/) May 1st 2009 at 8:30AM Text SizeA_A_ (javascript:void(0)) _A_ (javascript:void(0)) Filed under: _Company News_ (http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/company-news/) , _Investing_ (http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/investing/) President Obama _clearly blamed hedge funds_ (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/04/30/AR2009043004141.html) for the collapse of the Chrysler deal, which ultimately forced the company into bankruptcy Thursday. Hedge funds hold about $1 billion of the automaker's debt, which they bought at deep discounts from other investors who wanted out. In his speech Thursday, Obama said, "In particular, a group of investment firms and hedge funds decided to hold out for the prospect of an unjustified taxpayer-funded bailout. They were hoping that everybody else would make sacrifices, and they would have to make none. Some demanded twice the return that other lenders were getting. I don't stand with them." As DailyFinance's Peter Cohan wrote yesterday, "Perhaps they bought General Motors (_GM_ (http://finance.aol.com/quotes/general-motors-corporation/gm/nys) ) and Chrysler debt in the _open market at 15 cents on the dollar_ (http://www.dailyfinance.com/2009/04/30/hedge-fund-honchos-slash-us-auto-indust rys-throat/) and are now holding out for, say, an extra billion -- letting them triple their investment instead of merely doubling it." In defense of the hedge funds, one of their attorneys, Ron Geffner, told the Washington Post, "I stand with the fact that we live in a capitalist society where companies who don't modify their business plans and stay current die and go by the wayside." That may be true, but if Chrysler dies, the hedge funds get nothing for their investment. So where's the logic in this statement? Does he mean the hedge funds will stand on principal and let Chrysler die, rather than get at least something for their investment? Some hedge funds tried for a softer approach at defending their position. A group of firms that would not identify themselves put out a statement that said the government "unfairly asked our fund shareholders to make financial sacrifices greater than those being made by" other creditors. They are holding back, hoping that the bankruptcy court will award them more as it discharges the debt. Sarah Anderson, director of the Global Economy Project at the Institute for Policy Studies, summed it up well for the Post, "It seems rather short-sighted to risk having the auto sector collapse so that they can get a few more cents on the dollar for their investors." While hedge funds try to make those few extra cents on the dollar, thousands of workers face the prospect of additional layoffs and the car industry moves just one step closer to collapse. As I crossed their path, one of her dogs (it was a black mid-sized dog) chased after my elderly greyhound, who fell in the street and hurt his hip again (he's still limping hours later). This is not the first time we've encountered this unfriendly and irresponsible dog owner, who shrugged off my complaint to her to please control her dogs. I reminded her that she needs to have her dogs on a leash (she puts them on leash only when encountering other dogs). I'm not sure if her aggressive dog is only so with dogs or also with humans, but be careful out there if you see her. -Greg Greg Alexander Freelance Writer/Editor Editor, Mason-Dixon Arrive 2629 Guilford Avenue Baltimore, MD 21218 410-243-3387 ugagrad93 at yahoo.com www.gregoryjalexander.com From oldhousehistory at aol.com Mon May 4 12:23:40 2009 From: oldhousehistory at aol.com (oldhousehistory at aol.com) Date: Mon, 04 May 2009 12:23:40 -0400 Subject: [Chat] 300 Lorraine - Abandoned House Message-ID: <8CB9AEBD1E43C09-F70-84B@mblk-d27.sysops.aol.com> See my rant about 300 E. Lorraine Street, an abandoned and rapidly deteriorating house I?ve been complaining about for years.? I?m getting no action from our elected officials, nor our city employees.? They have not only let me down, but cost the city tens of thousands in lost tax revenue: despite its condemnation classification, its taxed as a principal residence rate.? The court ordered its demolition in December of 2007!? I?ve learned today that the owner claims it as her principal residence, and it?s been taxed as such since 2003. ? It?s completely uninhabitable, as the court found, and was ordered razed 17 months ago.? So how does the city classify it as her principal residence, accept her tax payment of just $650 in February of this year, when no one has been inside since 2004?? Its not had rain gutters since 2004, and all rain water from the roof pours directly inside the kitchen from the back wall: the windows are so black with mold you can?t see inside anymore.? ? ??? Paul Williams 2629 Guilford Ave ? ? An email I sent yesterday to officials supposedly tracking the situation, with prior emails below!: ? ? Ladies & Gentlemen! ? I?ve been patiently waiting for information from you all on this ongoing problematic vacant house (now full of mold) which I?ve been complaining about for years (see=2 0below).? I had hoped to find resolution to the problem through the normal channels, as the court system was making progress in her contempt case.? ??Today, I watched the rain pour into the basement from the back roof and noticed that the windows are so black with mold one can?t see inside.? ? When I went to look the house up today (300 E. Lorraine ? Square 3837, lot 66) on the real property tax database, imagine my anger at finding that the owner not only paid her taxes in February (on a condemned house where she is in contempt of court), but that she LISTED THE HOUSE AS HER PRICIPAL RESIDENCE.? And, she got the residential tax rate (about $1400 per year), which I?m sure she has obviously been getting for several years, even with condemnation proceedings now over two years old.? Nobody can, or has, lived in the house since 2004.? ? We moved into an adjoining house facing the shared alley in 2003.? Even the illegal vagrants moved out in 2004 because of the deteriorated condition.? ?How can the city allow someone to claim this condemned property as her principal residence? ?She was found in contempt of court, and was subject to a $500 per day fine beginning in November of 2008.? ?? ? I was assured action by my elected officials for several years now, and thought our communication last November ensured that this house be torn down.? Now I need to expose this illegal and embarrassing theft from our city coffers, and I intend on doing so by any public means possible, beginning with the media on Tuesday morning, unless I hear from you with its current status, the house is scheduled to be torn down, her $500 per day fine is being paid, and she will be taxed retro-actively at the vacant rate; or otherwise assured that my city officials are doing their job.? ? ? As one who now accumulates a lot of recyclables in a 2 week period (and even more when, as currently, there is a 3 week period between recycling collections), I personally definitely favor the proposed ordinance. The one problem I saw with the original proposal (that while you would now be allowed to put your trash out in the alley the night before, you would still be required to bring in the trash can immediately after trash collection), and which I commented about to Mary Pat Clarke, has apparently been fixed by an amendment. She is from Salt Lake City, where?Rachel and I have been living (I?work for the Univ. of Utah - that's a complicated story for another day).?In any case, we will be back in Baltimore full-time starting mid-June, and Summer is exploring the possibility of coming with us. She wants to see another part of the country and explore new horizons. We would employ?her about 20 hours per week, after school?and?early evenings, plus perhaps a couple Saturday afternoons or nights?per month.? It would work best if we can find two other things: 1) Somewhere for her to live nearby, like a room in somebody's house, since our house is not really set up for that right now. 2) Another family that would want to employ her 20 hours/wk, perhaps partly in exchange for room and board. About?Summer: She is 25, has a college degree in early childhood education, and has tons of experience caring for children. She is responsible, reliable, kind, smart, patient, and creative. Rachel completely adores her. We currently pay her $13.00 per hour, plus both our and her portion of social security.? I am not familiar with the market in Baltimore, but?we anticipate paying her slightly more there. If anyone is possibly?interested in this, or maybe do you know somebody who might be -- in either part 1 or part 2 --?please let us know.? It would be a perfect situation for a family with young children who needs part-time care during work hours. I don't know if this will work or not, but she's interested, and we love her, so we want to explore it.? I notified the peo ple I've been working with for two years now with modest to no success (in the to: line above) on Sunday, and NOT ONE has replied, not even a polite reply saying work is in progress, concerning the myriad ongoing problems outlined below, which have been previously reported over two years ago now.? So I ask you as mayor: Why is this house being taxed as a resident occupied house after 5 years as an abandoned property, and why has her contempt of court case not been enforced a full year later?? The house was to have been torn down in December of 2007.? How can the tax office accept a tax payment in February of this year, when she is in contempt of court to transfer sell or demolish the house, as condemned, and accept her claim that it is owner occupied?? This is tax fraud, and the owner needs to be retroactively fined and taxed as an abandoned property.?? ? In my opinion, you all have failed us residents miserably, and I'm now going to the press20to expose this gross inaction.? The majority of abandoned properties in the city are not generating any tax revenue. Double this individual's tax bill, and they will likely stop paying their taxes. This will drive the property into tax sale and, based on the the current shape it is in, will quite possibly become another city owned property. Good luck finding a reporter that would do a story on this. How about one of the other tens of thousands of abandoned properties that are not generating ANY tax revenue? Lorraine Street abandoned house status Mayor Shelia Dixon: I have been pressing, complaining, and following the court case concerning the clearly abandoned and rapidly deteriorating property at 300 E. Lorraine Street in Charles Village to no avail.? Sunday, I learned to my disgust, that this blighted property is being taxed at the owner occupied rate: no one can, nor has, occupied the house since 2004 (even the vagrants have run away).??? I notified the people I've been working with for two years now20with modest to no success (in the to: line above) on Sunday, and NOT ONE has replied, not even a polite reply saying work is in progress, concerning the myriad ongoing problems outlined below, which have been previously reported over two years ago now.? So I ask you 0A as mayor: Why is this house being taxed as a resident occupied house after 5 years as an abandoned property, and why has her contempt of court case not been enforced a full year later?? The house was to have been torn down in December of 2007.? How can the tax office accept a tax payment in February of this year, when she is in contempt of court to transfer sell or demolish the house, as condemned, and accept her claim that it is owner occupied?? This is tax fraud, and the owner n eeds to be retroactively fined and taxed as an abandoned property.???? In my opinion, you all have failed us residents miserably, and I'm now going to the press20to expose this gross inaction.? Lorraine Street Ladies=2 0& Gentlemen! I8 0ve been patiently waiting for information from you all on this ongoing problematic vacant house (now full of mold) which I?ve been complaining about for years (see below).? I had hoped to find resolution to the problem through the normal channels, as the court system was making progress in her contempt case.??? Today, I watched the rain pour into the basement from the back roof and noticed that the windows are so black with mold one can?t see inside.? When I went to look the house up today (300 E. Lorraine ? Square 3837, lot 66) on the real property tax database, imagine my anger at finding that the owner not only paid her taxes in February (on a condemned house where she is in contempt of court), but that she LISTED THE HOUSE AS HER PRICIPAL RESIDENCE.&nbs p; And, she got the residential tax rate (about $1400 per year), which I?m sure she has obviously been getting for several years, even with condemnation proceedings now over two years old.? Nobody can, or has, lived in the house since 2004.? We moved into an adjoining house facing the shared alley in 2003.? Even the illegal vagrants moved out in 2004 because of the deteriorated condition.?? How can the city allow someone to claim this condemned property as her principal resi dence?? She was found in contempt of court, and was subject to a $500 per day fine beginning in November of 2008.??? I was assured action by my elected officials for several years now, and thought our communication last November ensured that this house be torn down.? Now I need to expose this illegal and embarrassing theft from our city coffers, and I intend on doing so by any public means possible, beginning with the media on Tuesday morning, unless I hear from you with its curren t status, the house is scheduled to be torn down, her $500 per day fine is being p aid, and she will be taxed retro-actively at the vacant rate; or otherwise assured that my city officials are doing their job.?? Mr. Carloff repaired our crumbling brick steps. They look as good as new. He also did a pretty good job preserving the little column decoration that we have embedded in there. They cut the old bricks, remortared, pointed, etc. We got his name from Sandy Sparks who was also quite happy with the work he did for her. Mr. Carloff is a very laconic fellow with limited English. We think he's Polish. His rates were quite reasonable. We paid $400 for our job, which took 4-5 hours with 2-3 people working.
