In conjunction with the Baltimore Marathon, Under Armour has arranged with the city to plant 10 trees on St. Paul between 24th St and North Ave. They are going to be planting these trees this Saturday (10/3) morning between 9am and 1pm. We are hoping to get a few volunteers from the community to help with the planting . If anyone is interested, please have them contact me, either by email (mkeogh at greaterhomewood.org) or phone (443-324-7162). Also, I was hoping that you could add me to the BMOG listserve. They must be received at the CVCBD offices at 2434 St. Paul Street or at 2926 St. Paul Street (Jeff Millard Chairman of Governance Committee). If you have not received a form you can download one from www.charlesvillage.org. You should also check out the revised bylaws on the same website where you can compare them with the current bylaws to see what changes are being proposed. These changes will be discussed on Oct 13 as well. After the second time the bag was left behind, I called 311. The city managed to respond and pick up the bag of recycling the second time--I am sure only because I told them I would call Mary Pat's office, and Channel 2.? Lo and behold, it was left behind just last week, once again. I don't get it--is it that difficult for city employees to grab a bag that is clearly filled with recycling and take it?? Someone kindly offer some advise that will make this seemingly very simple task even more simple for these employees. Thanks so much. Haydee M. Luckily, at 7:20 or so I heard the recycling truck and got out of bed, ran outside and saw they had not picked it up. They were a few houses down and I pulled the recycling over and told they missed this one for the third week in a row. Matthew will be able to answer your question because he meets regularly with the Baltimore City Department of Public Works about such issues, especially the person who supervises the sanitation workers. Matt can be reached at the CVCBD offices at 410-235-4411 or by email. I just called the CVCBD office to give him the heads up but no one answers so they must be closed for Columbus Day. So give Matthew a call tomorrow to follow up with him. You can always send him a follow up email. The CHAT list is not the official communication vehicle for either the CVCA organization or the CVCBD. I just use it as a resident to make sure that news gets out. Therefore, any complaints you have about city sanitation services should be directed to Matthew at the CVCBD. Also, check out the CVCBD website at www.charlesvillage.org for more information about services provided. The CVCA has a sanitation committee which assists the CVCBD with neighborhood cleanups like the one that is happening this Saturday, October 17 from 9-12. (Check CVCBD website and recent mailings.) The CVCA is currently setting up its new website at www.charlesvillage.net but there is currently no sanitation info on it as far as I know. Let me know if you want to join the CVCA and its sanitation committee. You can send an email to Jennifer Erickson, President, when you have any questions or concerns. I hope this information helps you reach a satisfactory conclusion to your issue and understand the best way to contact the CVCBD and CVCA in the future. If you do not receive a satisfactory response, please let me know. I hope to meet you tomorrow night, Tuesday, October 13, at 6 PM - SS Phillip &James Church, 29th and Charles, for the CVCBD Quad Elections and Bylaw review. I am sure that we can get the answer to your question at that time. Sharon L. I know that theoretically they're supposed to take it whether it's in a yellow container or not, but so many people use the containers now that the recycling may no longer be obvious if it isn't in one. You can get one of the big cans from the Ace Hardware store behind the Giant for less than $25. jf On Oct 10, 2009, at 3:07 AM, Haydee M. The bag--which positively cannot be missed--had been placed in the corner of 33rd and Guilford, where the city used to pick it up. After the second time the bag was left behind, I called 311. I went a couple of rounds with the operator who told me that the bag needed to be placed in the alley, adding that since the 1-1 change, all recycling was to be placed in the same place as the regular trash. The city managed to respond and pick up the bag of recycling the second time--I am sure only because I told them I would call Mary Pat's office, and Channel 2. Lo and behold, it was left behind just last week, once again. Is it that difficult for city employees to grab a bag that is clearly filled with recycling and take it? Someone kindly offer some advise that will make this seemingly very simple task even more simple--we are committed to easing the devastation to the environment, but the employees of "Charm City" are not making it easy. I did get around to contacting Mark Mitchell. It turns out that he does only clocks -- not watches. The Urbanite did an article on Read St. stores that quotes Mr. Mitchell. His shop is #3 on the list here: http://www.urbanitebaltimore.com/includes/print.cfm?sectionID=4&IssueID=20&ArticleID=174&print=1 Mitchell referred me to Burke Pieper: (410) 252-8024. Burke works out of the Baltimore Gold and Silver Co. on Charles St., just north of Saratoga. I brought my watch there and spoke to one staff member who said he would do a quick check. If it needed repairs, they would leave it for Burke, who is their expert. As it turns out, the watch started running again after they opened the case and adjusted the stem. They didn't charge me anything for the ten minutes of their time they spent looking at it, which was a surprise to me. I was prepared to pay at least a small charge. In any case, I haven't needed to call Mr. Pieper, but I can say that the Baltimore Gold and Silver Co. are good people to deal with. --Emil On Fri, Jul 3, 2009 at 14:28, Christine Gray wrote: > Emil--Mark Mitchell at 206 West Read St has repaired/tuned up the clocks in > Penn Station, at MICA, and the Library of Congress. ?He also repairs > wristwatches. > > W 410-837-7055, I think > > H 410-837-3233 > > Christine > > -----Original Message----- > From: chat-bounces at charlesvillage.info > [mailto:chat-bounces at charlesvillage.info] On Behalf Of Emil Volcheck > Sent: Friday, July 03, 2009 12:11 PM > To: Charles Village Chat List > Subject: [Chat] watch repair > > Hello, neighbors, > > Can anyone recommend a watch or clock repair shop? > I don't mean just a jeweler but a real watchmaker. > > Thanks, > > --Emil > -- Emil Volcheck volcheck at acm.org http://EmilVolcheck.com/ From ola at classroom34.com Thu Oct 15 09:37:27 2009 From: ola at classroom34.com (Oladipo Taiwo) Date: Thu, 15 Oct 2009 15:37:27 +0200 Subject: [Chat] Sunday - Community Watercolor Class Message-ID: October 18 - Community Watercolor *CLASS: *Community Watercolor* * Learn the fundamentals of painting with watercolors in a fun and positive environment. Jamie Raskin at BES this Sunday Message-ID: Hello, neighbors, Sen. Jamie Raskin will address the Baltimore Ethical Society this Sunday, Oct. 25th, at 10:30 am. I am sure this will be a very interesting talk. The description of his talk is below. --Emil "One Nation Under the Constitution: An Enlightenment Philosophy for American Life" by Senator Jamie Raskin (D-Montgomery County) Senator Raskin became a hero to humanists across the country in 2006 when, testifying as a constitutional law expert, he told a Maryland lawmaker: "Senator, with all due respect, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution; you didn't put your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible.". Today, as the Senator representing Silver Spring and Takoma Park, he sits next to that legislator. Senator Jamie Raskin received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Humanist Association in 2008 for "standing up for intellectual freedom and the separation of church and state." Raskin is a professor of constitutional law at American University's Washington College of Law and Director of its Program on Law and Government and its Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project. A prolific writer and public interest lawyer, Raskin is the author of the Washington Post bestseller "Overruling Democracy: The Supreme Court versus the American People" and "We the Students", a CQ Press Bestseller. -- Emil Volcheck volcheck at acm.org http://EmilVolcheck.com/ From SLG2700 at cs.com Wed Oct 28 16:12:46 2009 From: SLG2700 at cs.com (SLG2700 at cs.com) Date: Wed, 28 Oct 2009 16:12:46 EDT Subject: [Chat] Mayor seeking community input on Live Entertainment Bill Message-ID: Dear Neighbors: The Baltimore Sun at http://www.baltimoresun.com is conducting a Poll of readers on whether Sheila Dixon should sign or veto the Live Entertainment Bill passed by the City Council on 10/26/2009 expanding the use of live music in bars and restaurants near certain Residential Areas. Or you can send your comments to the Mayor c/o Kristy Taylor at Kristy.Taylor at baltimorecity.gov The CVCA Board opposed the Bill on Second Reader back in May because it failed to provide a licensing structure for the use that could be closely monitored by the City. Once again the CVCA Land Use Committee is recommending to the CVCA Board that it send a letter to the Mayor asking her to veto the Bill as passed, even with the companion bills which were introduced to make the bill stronger. If the CVCA Board approves this letter, and it looks like it will, the letter will be sent to the Mayor on behalf of the CVCA. Right now the vote online is 73% in favor of the Bill and 23% against. Please add your vote to the mix. Who knows how many non-city residents have been voting. A summary of the Land Use Committee's proposed letter is as follows: After careful consideration by its Land Use Committee and Board of Directors, the Charles Village Civic Association ("CVCA") opposes City Council Bill 08-0163, the Live Entertainment Bill. This Bill is a disappointing solution to the initial goal of balancing the desire to expand live entertainment venues in neighborhood business districts with providing sufficient enforcement mechanisms to ensure that these establishments are good neighbors to the nearby residential districts. Adding live entertainment as a conditional use to B1 and B2 zoning areas is an insufficient attempt at striking the necessary balance between the interests of businesses and their surrounding residential communities. The Bill creates a burden on the communities to make and pursue complaints against unruly establishments instead of providing a licensing system to regularly monitor these establishments. The two companion bills, which were passed by the City Council in an effort to reduce this burden, do not go far enough to protect the community. Currently in hearings before the BMZA, our community volunteers are forced to spend hours waiting to oppose zoning applications for changes in our neighborhoods that are pushed forward by the applicants with little advance notice to the community. We are very concerned about the possibility that Live Entertainment applications will be added to that hearing list. CVCA continues to support the creation of a licensing system for live entertainment venues in the City and not the abandonment of the idea. We appreciate the difficulties encountered during the lengthy legislative process. We ask you to veto City Council Bill #08-0163 so that the City Council can continue to consider a Live Entertainment licensing system that would enliven Baltimore as a creative and fun place to live and visit while protecting its residents. Here is the article on the subject of Live Entertainment from Tuesday's paper. -------------------- City Council approves live-entertainment bill -------------------- Bands, singers could perform at trendy bars, restaurants By Annie Linskey | annie.linskey at baltsun.com October 27 2009 The Baltimore City Council voted Monday to allow bars and restaurants in some of the city's trendiest neighborhoods to hire bands, singers and other performers, overturning a decades-old prohibition that City Council President Stephanie C. Rawlings-Blake says has stifled nightlife in town. The complete article can be viewed at: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/baltimore-city/bal-md.ci.live27oct 27,0,4607385.story Sharon L.
