Giant was founded by a kosher butcher named Isidore Cohen who lived somewhere in the DC/Baltimore area, but before he died, he sold Giant to Royal Ahold which is a Dutch Company. After that, in my opinion, Giant went downhill. I have been told that Stop & Shop, a chain in Massachusetts also acquired by Royal Ahold and now part of the same division of Royal Ahold as Giant, has also gone downhill in quality of service to customers. A few years ago, Royal Ahold was caught cooking its books i.e. pretending to be more profitable than it was. That involved stores in South America, not in the U.S. Personally, I will continue to shop at Giant for the things that I cannot readily get at the farmers' market. But I tend to buy a lot at Whole Foods (expensive often, I know, but worth it to me for the quality and for products that cannot be found at Giant or Eddie's, and Whole Foods is an American company), and I often go 3 blocks to Eddie's rather than 6 blocks to Giant. Safeway pulled completely out of Baltimore City some years ago, then moved back into the City when it opened its store in Charles Village. My impression is that its prices are higher than those at Giant. As much as I hate Walmart, I expect it to have a good effect on prices at Safeway. Giant reportedly lowered its prices because too many of its customers were driving to a Walmart. Steve. When these roofs are installed they usually come with a ten year warranty as long as you pay the company to recoat every three years. When they recoat they also check and repair flashing, vent collars, etc. I paid $400 to have my roof silvercoated the last time it was due to be coated. The hext time I am in the market for a new roof I will go with a 20 year rubber roof because they require significantly less maintenance. Chris Merriam Chris MerriamApril 22, 2010 at 1:50pm Subject: Important message about neighborhood safety This is from Nancy Miller, down in South Remington: "Hello friends and neighbors. On Tuesday, April 20th, morning around 2am a man attacked my friend and roommate in our neighborhood. She was walking alone, which a lot of us do, down Howard St. and made a right onto W. 24th. (Right where the new storage facility is being built.) He was right around the corner as soon as she turned. First, he tried to get her phone number and flirt with her, she said no and kept on walking past him. Next, she heard him coming from behind her and before she could turn around he shoved her from behind onto the ground. She quickly tried to get back up and answer her phone which was ringing. Once she did he shoved her down again. She then managed to get up, answer the phone and start running. He chased her down to Hampden Ave. She believes he ran off when he saw her friends truck headlights and heard her say I'm right here. Her friend was coming down Sisson St. He then jumped over the fence of the industrial area across from the 400 block of W. 24th St. She didn't get a really good look at him but she does know he was an older, maybe 50's, black guy that had a limp. She remembers he had something white on his face or some really bad acne and looked homeless. She doesn't remember his skin tone very well but she said he wasn't especially dark skinned. Please pass this on to warn our fellow neighbors, especially the ladies. If anyone has any information about this or saw anything please message me. Until this happened my friends and myself have always felt safe to walk alone anytime in this area. Now, we will definitely be honoring the buddy system. Be careful everyone!"
