It is a long hair (maine coon looking) cat with a predominate black & gray pattern on its back, and a mostly white uder belly.? The cat also has a green and blue collar. ? I also asked around the neighborhood if they know of anyone who has lost or has mentioned someone who has lost a cat. ? Given the fact that it is very cold and windy, and also the fact that my husband and i can not take the cat in, we have decided today to take it to the SPCA in Hampden. ? I will check these forums again before we head out to the spca at 11am ? ? ? ? ? ? ? "Logic is the cement of our civilization with which we ascend from chaos using reason as our guide." So, tired of renting cars and taking cabs to make do, we must begin the dreaded search for a car. Since we are on a tight budget and dealers offer few decent cars for under $11,000 it seems, I thought I'd ask if you know of anyone out there looking to sell a car in Charles Village? A recorded message told me that I can lower my credit card rate to 6% if I press a key on my phone and talk to a live operator. The credit card was not identified (and caller id showed the caller as "CALLER"). My guess is that if I had spoken to a live operator, I would have been asked for a credit card number. And if I had given a number, my account would have been run up to its limit. I might well have been asked for other information such as a social security number. Since I did not speak to a live operator, the only violation of law that I can document is a violation of the do not call registry. I have reported the calls as such. The plain fact is that no legitimate credit card company would make such an unidentified call. Nor would any legitimate credit card company call a customer to ask for personal information over the phone. If you receive a similar call, do not fall for it. And if your phone number is on the national do not call registry, please report any such call at www.donotcall.gov . Hopefully, federal law enforcement will get enough complaints to put the perpetrator out of business. Steve. I spoke with Jenny this morning, and she tells me that after some tense days of waiting, Lindsay is now doing much better. Yesterday (Sunday), she woke up for the first time since the accident and was talking, eating, reading, etc. They aren?t out of the woods yet, but the signs are promising and the family is feeling cautiously optimistic. Jenny asked to me to tell everyone that they are extremely appreciative of the outpouring of support and concern from neighbors and friends. She also wanted me to ask people not to bring any more food to the house. They appreciate the gesture, but no one is there to eat it (and the stove isn?t working so they can?t even warm stuff up). The family is camped out in the 5th Floor waiting area at Shock Trauma in the University of Maryland Medical Center (22 S. Greene St). Visiting hours are Noon-6:30PM and 8:00-10:00PM. Jenny wasn?t sure how many more days they would need to be there, but that visitors and well-wishers are welcome. Message-ID: <384c4.3b16de6e.387fcbad@cs.com> Dear Neighbors: By now some of you may have noticed that DPW did not keep its promise (See their Press Release below from 12/18) and did not pick up the Christmas trees with the regular trash pickup on Tuesday. Matt Bradby at CVCBD (Benefits District) reports that he spoke to Valentina Ukwoma, Bureau Head for Solid Waste, who told him to tell residents to call 311 and get a complaint number if their tree was not picked up as promised on their regular trash day. That way there is a public record of the problem which will result in better accountability. This will result in the trees being picked up in the next day or two. If not, call back using the complaint number you received the first time. I have sent an email to David Scott, Director of DPW, asking him to address the problem and explain why it happened. I will share his response when I receive it. I will be asking the CVCBD to assist with this problem. For those of you with Wednesday regular trash days: Did the sanitation workers pick up the Christmas trees? I am also concerned about how the DPW handled trash pickup after the snow storm when most of the alleys were actually passable and they did not even check before leaving the trash behind. Trash was left in alleys that were actually plowed and some trash was picked up in alleys that were not plowed. No rhyme or reason to what happened. I do not understand why they do not put a shovel on the front of a pickup truck and do the alleys. But I want to get this tree problem resolved before going into that issue. Again, I will be looking for CVCBD's help in resolving this issue. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Sharon L. DPW will provide Christmas tree mulching every Saturday during the month of January 2010, at the Citizen Drop-off Center, 701 Reedbird Avenue from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Residents should bring their own bags or containers if they want to bring back mulch for their own use. While supplies last, community groups are encouraged to come by during this time to also bag up free mulch for neighborhood gardens. For residents who cannot bring their trees for mulching, the Bureau of Solid Waste will offer curbside tree collection from Tuesday, January 5, 2010 through Friday, January 29, 2010. Residents should set out trees on their trash collection day at the location where their trash is picked up. All tinsel and ornaments should be removed from the trees before they are set out for curbside collection or mulching. For additional information, please call 311. By 4:30 they had not picked it up so I took it back in.? However, they did pick up trash in the alley that morning.? Then on Thursday, I put out my recycling in the alley - since it was clear - and it was not picked up.? I later realized it was probably a furlough day so didn't worry.? However, the?next Thursday?I talked to the city crew picking up the recycling, and they told me they had worked on the previous Thursday but they picked up in front, not in the alley.? So there were a lot of mixed signals.? I would certainly prefer they pick up in the alley, even after a storm, because we keep our alley?a lot clearer than?Calvert St. There?were a lot of Christmas trees in the alley?today....they did not get picked up on Tuesday. So my guess is that regular parking restrictions are in force. After all, except for government employees, today generally is not a holiday. Steve. One of them is downtown at noon on Tuesday. Click the link and put in your zip code to get full details and RSVP. Thanks, Matthew -----Original Message----- From: Charles Chamberlain, Democracy for America To: weinsteinm at aol.com Sent: Sun, Jan 24, 2010 12:21 pm Subject: Democrats on the verge of full-fledged retreat Matthew - After one bad Senate election, most Democrats in Washington are on the verge of full-fledged retreat and everything we've fought for together hangs in the balance. President Obama has signaled he's open to dramatically scaling back health care reform. The chairman of the Senate Banking Committee says he might gut the financial reform bill to appease Republicans. And on top of all that, the Supreme Court just opened the floodgates of corporate cash on politics! Retreat is exactly the wrong message for Democrats to take from recent election losses. The lesson from Massachusetts is that voters want more change -- not less. It's time for Democrats to stand up to corporate interests and fight for working families by passing healthcare reform and taking on Wall Street. So Democracy for America members are joining with our friends at MoveOn in organizing emergency rallies nationwide on Tuesday to demand Democrats show backbone and leadership -- starting with passage of real healthcare reform. FIND AN EMERGENCY RALLY NEAR YOU We need a big turnout to show Democrats we're still waiting on them to deliver the change we voted for on healthcare and everything else. Make no mistake; Democrats still have the ability to pass healthcare reform and other progressive legislation. Even after last Tuesday's election loss, Democrats still have larger majorities in Congress than Republicans ever did under George W. Bush. All Democrats in Washington need is to show some backbone. It's up to us to demand they use it, because progressives don't retreat -- we lead. ATTEND AN EMERGENCY RALLY ON TUESDAY Thank you for everything you do, -Charles Charles Chamberlain, Political Director Democracy for America Democracy for America relies on you and the people-power of more than one million members to fund the grassroots organizing and training that delivers progressive change on the issues that matter. She has been a tireless advocate for social justice for more than 20 years. Described as "one of America?s most committed -- and most effective -- fighters for human rights" by N.Y. Newsday, and called "one of the high profile leaders of the peace movement" by the L.A.Times, Medea has distinguished herself as an eloquent and energetic figure in the progressive movement. In June of 2005, she was one of 1,000 exemplary women from 140 countries nominated to receive the Nobel Peace Prize collectively. Since September 11, 2001, Medea has been working to promote a U.S. foreign policy that would respect human rights and gain us allies instead of contributing to violence and undermining our international reputation. She has recently led human rights delegations to Gaza and at the time of her talk will have just returned from an international peace march there. Ric Pfeffer, in whose honor this lecture series was established, worked as a lawyer with OSHA at the Department of Labor, where he made notable contributions to worker safety. At the time of his retirement due to illness, he was developing a standard that would have established a single universal process for managing and monitoring worker health and safety in all of the nation's workplaces?a project long supported by the labor movement. Information: 410.466.7344 or Pfefferlecture at gmail.com J Street, the political arm of the pro-Israel, pro-peace movement, invites you to the official launch of J Street Baltimore on Thursday, February 4, 7-9 PM at Temple Oheb Shalom, 7310 Park Heights Avenue. The event is part of J Street's new national grassroots field program, which will broaden and deepen the presence of this movement in communities across the country. J Street Baltimore integrates the local Brit Tzedek v'Shalom chapter, and draws new supporters from J Street's substantial netroots base. We seek to engage and mobilize Baltimoreans like you to advocate effectively for American support for a negotiated, two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and for true peace and security for Israel as a democratic homeland for the Jewish people. But we need your help and your participation. The February 4 event will be a great opportunity to hear more about J Street, meet other J Street supporters, and find out how you can get directly involved in this extraordinary cause right here in Baltimore. In addition, J Street's Executive Director, Jeremy Ben-Ami, will be appearing via live video feed to simultaneous kick-off events all around the country. Refreshments will be available, too. We look forward to seeing you there.
