[mailto:info at dpob.org] Sent: Friday, June 04, 2010 4:07 PM To: langwidge at comcast.net Subject: Getting 'Round Downtown is About to Get a Lot Easier FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, June 4, 2010 TRANSPORTATION UPDATES: Getting 'Round Downtown is About to Get a Lot Easier Beginning this month, Downtown commuters, residents, and visitors will have two new ways to get where they need to go. Charm City Circulator - Purple Route On Monday, June 7th, the Charm City Circulator's Purple Line will begin running north/south along the Charles Street corridor between Federal Hill and Penn Station. Downtown Partnership President, Kirby Fowler, will join Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, City Transportation Director Al Foxx, and other City officials for a 10 a.m. press conference at Cross Street Market for the launch of the new route. As with the east/west Orange Line, which is already exceeding ridership projections, the Purple Line is a free, convenient, and environmentally-friendly way to move throughout Downtown and Midtown neighborhoods. It will connect riders with transit stops; link residential, business, and cultural destinations; and give visitors a new way to get from the Inner Harbor into Mount Vernon. We hope you'll take advantage of this fantastic new transit option as soon as it begins operating on Monday afternoon. Become a Zipster - ZipCar is Coming to Downtown ZipCar, the popular car sharing company, is bringing a fleet of vehicles to Downtown later this month. The service is in cities around the country, including Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, and it already has a small presence in Baltimore near the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus in Charles Village. It will appeal to visitors and residents who need to take trips that transit can't accommodate, and it's particularly useful for companies as a replacement for fleet vehicles. It's just like having a car but without all the overhead expenses and maintenance. ZipCar works on a membership basis. Individuals or companies can join and will have access to different types of cars that will be parked throughout Downtown. Where they're parked depends on you. ZipCar parks its vehicles where there is enough demand, so Downtown Partnership is asking its members to express their interest in ZipCar. Go to our Facebook page, or email us at info at dpob.org, and let us know if you or your business would be interested in becoming a ZipCar member. Visit www.zipcar.com for more information about the service and its many benefits. Those six are Jon Lesser, Charles Martucci, Patrick Roanhouse, Jason Pyeron, Robin Truiett-Theodorson, and Emil Volcheck. Check out bmorefiber.com to see their work. Google plans to announce their choice by the end of the year. Two Charles Villagers have been helping to lead the Baltimore Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). I stopped by Moxie's and found out that they have mostly all the same hair cutters/stylists (if you can call them that) as they did when it was Tempachi. Honestly, that is good for the stylists who kept their jobs with the change in ownership, but it is also disappointing because my hair and Eric's hair has been butchered every time we had gone there, and we don't require anything fancy. Unfortunately, Eric kept trying it multiple times, but the results were always the same---BAD. I really don't understand why it is so challenging for people to cut a man's hair in an even, tapered when they do it all day long every day. If anyone has a recommendation for a good barber/men's hair stylist in the area (not too expensive), we would love to hear about one. Thanks. Royal Avenue to manage traffic speeds, increase greenery, and improve conditions for bicyclists. The meeting will be held in the Sherwood Room in Levering Hall on the Johns Hopkins University's Homewood Campus. A map showing Levering Hall can be found at the bottom of this message and the Sherwood Room is just inside on the left from the main entrance. If you're planning to attend, please RSVP at the link below so the City knows how many folks are going to show up (but show up even if you can't RSVP). Bike Boulevards, also known as Neighborhood Greenways, are low-traffic neighborhood streets that are optimized for bicycling, providing direct, attractive routes for bikes and making the streets quieter, prettier, and healthier than busy, car-filled street. Bike boulevards are more welcoming to kids, families and novice cyclists, and attractive for all kinds of cyclists who want to ride on a convenient & comfortable route and provide a wide variety of benefits for pedestrians and neighborhood residents as well. Baltimore's gridded street system is ideal for bike boulevards and Guilford Avenue is a great place to start because the City Public School Dept. HQ already serves to divert through auto (but not bike) traffic off the street and it provides a direct connection to downtown from neighborhoods in north central Baltimore and an alternative to the higher-speed, higher-volume arterials of Calvert, St. Paul, Charles, & Maryland. Guilford is already heavily used by bicyclists for commuting, getting to the four elementary schools located just off Guilford, and just riding around town and the signage and engineering improvements planned will make it more attractive for bicycle riders, pedestrians, and neighborhood residents. I hope you can come to tonight's meeting and will pass this on to friends, neighbors, and other individuals interested in sustainable transportation or the neighborhoods along Guilford. http://bit.ly/9ZqOOf - JHU Homewood Campus PDF Map http://baltimorecommutes.com/bike/bike-boulevards/ - Blog post about bike boulevards http://www.socializr.com/event/594267009/ - RSVP for tonight's meeting Patrick McMahon ............................................................................ ...................................
