Cavtel.com offers a phone + DSL package at a very good price. I plan to look into them in the near future. WiMax aka "4G": Chad described this in his reply to your message on the Discussion List. To summarize for the Chat List, he talked about getting a Sprint-brand "4G" card that gives mobile Internet access to both WiMax/4G and cellular/3G networks. (It prefers 4G and falls back to 3G seamlessly.) This is great for the road warrior, but the cheaper option is to buy just the WiMax service from Clear.com . WiMax launched about a year ago. This is long-distance wireless. I bought a subscription to provide Internet access at the Baltimore Ethical Society, and I can tell you it is great speed at a great price. I've been using it since January 2009. The speed is 5 Mbps down, 2.5 Mbps up. That's faster than my DSL (3 Mbps down, 768 Kbps up). The price is $35/month for life. It's been very reliable. BUT.... I bought the service from Xohm (a company owned by Sprint and some baby Bells), which was acquired by Clear.com . Clear suspended taking new customers in Baltimore while the Xohm system is in transition. So, the service still works fine at BES, but you can't buy new service. So this does you no good at the moment. Hope this gives you some ideas. Maybe Baltimore will be fortunate enough to be chosen by Google for their 1 Gbps optical fiber service. --Emil On Mon, Mar 1, 2010 at 16:43, Karen Morley wrote: > that is NOT?Verizon........nor Comcast, which isn't DSL anyway. ? Tuesday March 2, 2010 13:59 PM EST A new City law requires carbon monoxide detectors in residences. Is your family protected? http://bit.ly/bJciXQ Health Department, Fire Department and Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy Announce Start of CO Detector Ordinance BALTIMORE, MD (February 23, 2010) - Beginning on March 1, Baltimore City will require carbon monoxide (CO) detectors to be installed in residential dwellings, hotels and buildings used for living or sleeping. Today, Baltimore City Health and Fire officials joined with The Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy (CIRP), based at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, to warn residents of the health dangers of CO poisoning, to share prevention tips and to urge compliance with the new law. Since 2000, more than 25 people have died in Baltimore City as a result of CO poisoning. "Studies have shown that cities with CO detector ordinances have lower reported case fatality rates than in cities without ordinances. We thank the city council for passing this important ordinance requiring CO detectors installed in all city dwellings, helping us keep our families safe," said Interim City Health Commissioner Olivia Farrow. City Councilman James Kraft (District 1) sponsored the ordinance, which requires the installation and maintenance of carbon monoxide alarms in all new and existing residential dwellings, hotels, motels, boarding or rooming houses, or other structures where people live or sleep. The law applies to dwellings that use gas- or fossil fuel-burning furnaces or appliances. Residents should take care to follow manufacturer specifications when installing a new alarm to ensure effective protection. "I cannot emphasize enough how prevention is essential. All poisonings from CO are easily preventable with CO detectors, and this ordinance is therefore designed to save lives," the councilman said. The ordinance follows the February 13th sickening of six passengers on a cruise ship docked in Baltimore. Because CO is odorless and colorless, safeguards such as home CO detectors are essential in detecting leaks before they cause symptoms. Mild CO poisoning can cause nausea, headaches or shortness of breath; prolonged exposure to CO can cause dizziness, confusion, severe headaches, severe nausea, faintness, and death if treatment is not sought. Malfunctioning furnaces and other appliances that burn fuels are common culprits of home CO leaks. From 2008 through 2009, the Baltimore City Fire Department responded to more than 3,600 CO poisoning calls. "Like many injuries that occur in the home, CO poisoning can be prevented. By installing a CO alarm in the hallway near every separate sleeping area of their home, people can keep themselves safe," said Eileen McDonald, director of The Johns Hopkins Children's Safety Centers, which are run by CIRP. To speed the conversion of city homes into safer residences, Kidde, a leading manufacturer of residential fire safety products, has donated 250 free CO alarms that will be distributed to City residents who demonstrate financial need. The devices will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis at Johns Hopkins Children's Safety, located inside Children's Admitting at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center. The center is open Monday - Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; the phone number is (410) 614-5587. # # # For full details, go to http://local.nixle.com/alert/1356418/ Contact Information: Brian Schleter Administration 443-984-2623 brian.schleter at baltimorecity.gov To manage your text and email settings, please log into your account at http://local.nixle.com/accounts/login/. powered by nixle. I am thrilled to let you know this week that Johns Hopkins University, in a tremendous act of civic leadership, has answered that call. As of today, Hopkins?the state?s largest employer and a true leader in education and innovation?will encourage thousands of its employees to volunteer in City Schools by offering them up to two days of paid leave from their jobs over the next year to volunteer in schools. Hopkins President Ron Daniels announced this new partnership with City Schools?which Hopkins is calling Johns Hopkins Takes Time for Schools?by volunteering himself today at Barclay Elementary School, where he joined me to read to students in celebration of Read Across America Day. After spending the morning with students, he introduced the volunteer initiative as an important part of Hopkins? commitment to its home city. The Hopkins partnership with City Schools will make an incredible difference in the success of our kids and the strength of our schools. Every day spent by employees of this world-class institution in our schools will enrich our students? school experience and help us reach our goal of creating an entire system of great schools for all 83,000 of our great kids. Please join me in celebrating this new partnership and in thanking President Daniels and Johns Hopkins for their leadership in embracing the critical role the community plays in our schools. I look forward to entering into other similar partnerships with Baltimore?s many great institutions and organizations. Calvert and she said that the shooting happened in the back alley behind their house and didn't involve them. Police suspect it was drug related. One of her housemates had just walked in from the back alley and had seen 2 men with hoods and then as she went inside she heard shots and went back outside and one of the men was dead. She spent hours with the police telling them what she saw and heard. She is freaked out, but the rest of them are doing alright. I don't think that we will be able to go at this late notice because of our 2 kids, but hopefully others on this Chat listserve may be able to. I will definitely be giving what we can. Greg et al, I don't know whether they did not respond because they are overwhelmed with their financial problems right now, but I did contact someone there in December and dropped off bags of toys left over from our Village Parents Toy Swap. I had called two numbers-- the church number and then I found the number for Heart's Place directly (410-235-9269) . I didn't hear back from the church until weeks later, but I had gotten an immediate call back from Heart's Place Shelter. They were very grateful to have something to give to kids who were there during the holiday season. I hope that they are able to make it over this financial hump and that the Charles Village community will be able to contribute now and in the future. http://www.stjohnsbaltimore.org/heart%E2%80%99splaceshelter Lauren Lauren Redmond 2636 Guilford Ave. Baltimore, MD 21218 (410) 366-0162 laredmond at hotmail.com _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail: Trusted email with Microsoft?s powerful SPAM protection. http://clk.atdmt.com/GBL/go/210850552/direct/01/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I am copying our Northern District Neighborhood Services Officers, Officer Gibson and Officer Walter, who come to our assistance when necessary and ask them to advise us. In the meantime, Major Ross Buzzuro of the Northern District Police will be attending the Charles Village Civic Association Membership Meeting this Wednesday, March 24 at 7 p.m. in the basement of SSTs Philip and James Church at 2801 N. Charles Street. I will ask him then as well. It would be nice if you could attend the meeting and talk to him with me. Charles Village has a dedicated foot patrol officer, Officer Bill O' Donnell who we can call when we have problems. He will also be at the CVCA Membership meeting on March 24. I am also forwarding your message on to Walter Brown, Safety Coordinator for the Charles Village Benefits District, Management Authority, for his advice. Old Goucher Community Association whose boundaries overlap CVCA Boundaries down to 22nd Street, have been working hard to rid their area of Prostitutes. You may have noticed the blue flashing lights south of 25th Street on St. Paul and Calvert Streets. It appears that the problem has now moved northward. Whatever I learn I will forward on to you and the CHAT list. The CVCA Safety Committee could use new members. If you are interested in joining, please contact me. Sharon L.
