I thought that this was definitely worth forwarding since JHU is in our neighborhood and President Ron Daniels chose to volunteer at Barclay before announcing the new initiative!

I think that we should personally thank President Daniels for his efforts to improve our schools!

Dear City Schools Partners and Friends,

Last week I invited—and encouraged—the entire Baltimore community to become part of the transformation underway in Baltimore City Public Schools by signing on as partners and volunteers through our new volunteer matching system.

I am thrilled to let you know this week that Johns Hopkins University, in a tremendous act of civic leadership, has answered that call. As of today, Hopkins—the state’s largest employer and a true leader in education and innovation—will encourage thousands of its employees to volunteer in City Schools by offering them up to two days of paid leave from their jobs over the next year to volunteer in schools.

Hopkins President Ron Daniels announced this new partnership with City Schools—which Hopkins is calling Johns Hopkins Takes Time for Schools—by volunteering himself today at Barclay Elementary School, where he joined me to read to students in celebration of Read Across America Day. After spending the morning with students, he introduced the volunteer initiative as an important part of Hopkins’ commitment to its home city.

The Hopkins partnership with City Schools will make an incredible difference in the success of our kids and the strength of our schools. Every day spent by employees of this world-class institution in our schools will enrich our students’ school experience and help us reach our goal of creating an entire system of great schools for all 83,000 of our great kids.

Please join me in celebrating this new partnership and in thanking President Daniels and Johns Hopkins for their leadership in embracing the critical role the community plays in our schools. I look forward to entering into other similar partnerships with Baltimore’s many great institutions and organizations. Sincerely,

Andrés A. Alonso, Ed.D.
