[Chat] Convenience Store on 27th Street

Painting that awning a dark color sounds like an improvement. When it was
lite up yellow, it looked like something from the circus that should have
been installed on the Joppa Road between McDonald's and Beltway Liquors.

I have no doubt, they're a good business in the neighborhood. But the issue
is... the awning was installed without proper permits (not that it was butt
ugly).

Unfortunately, it looks far worse now painted over...it kind of resembles a
sex shop from the 1980s!

If they paid $15,000 for that sign, they got ripped off. As a realtor I can
tell you a sign like that can make it hard for nearby residents to sell
their homes. The bottom line is they failed to follow the law.

I recently spoke with the owners of the Jailene's on 27th and the orginal
sign cost almost $15,000. Why would someone choose to put so much effort
into complaining about a neighborhood business when there are many other
more important issues at hand? If anything, the sign provided light to an
otherwise dark block and it's not like the sign is on all night long, they
close between 8 and 8:30. It looks like they've painted over the original
sign with blue paint and now it looks completely drab. One of the best
things a community can do is to support a well run business. So completely
lame. Move to the county if you want everything to be "perfect".

Many of you know that the former convenience store on 27th between Guilford
and Calvert Street that had been run by Ms Sue was sold over the summer and
completely gutted and renovated, inside and out.

The fellows that opened the new store are great!  Its clean, well stocked
with myriad needs, deli meats, eggs, and everything you need in the middle
of a recipe.  They also take requests to stock your any need.  It opened
under the name Jalines.

They installed a huge canopy that kept you dry while coming and going, and
while it might not have been for everyone, it had the name and tag lines of
the store to advertise its presence.  I'm guessing it cost more than
$5,000.  Imagine our surprise last week when we saw them painting over the
sign, and removing any and all exterior signage.  The owners told us
somebody complained - not one house faces 27th Street - and they had to
remove everything.  They were visibly upset, and now are threatening to
leave the neighborhood.  Who would cause such a fuss?
