Thanks, John. I'm glad to hear that I am not alone in my assessment of the store and owners. I'll want to support whatever CVCA can do to retain the Schnapp Shoppe.

Linda,

The feedback that I have received from nearby residents concerned that the Schnapp Shoppe may be forced to close has been very favorable towards the business. The matter will be discussed at tomorrow's CVCA Land Use Committee meeting. I am advocating for evaluating the liquor stores on a case by case basis and giving them an opportunity for a hearing where they may obtain the proper zoning if warranted.

I would advocate for keeping it as a long-standing asset to Charles Village. The owners are responsive to their customers (more so than the liquor store on St. Paul). When I've requested a particular item, the Schnapp Shoppe has gotten it in.

The idea supposedly is to create a good environment for urban living (for people without cars), with a dynamic streetscape that does not separate residences and businesses serving residents. To my mind, the Schnapp Shoppe answers that goal and should remain as it is.

But the existing store was grandfathered in because it acquired a liquor license before the current laws went into effect (in the '70s, I believe. The law probably doesn't allow liquor stores in completely residential areas like the Schnapp Shop anymore.
