<DIV>We had a rash of plant stealing on our block (2700 Guilford) some years ago, but with high fences around most yards, it's now a little harder to get in. People sell the plants. I stopped planting full-size daffodils in front of my house because people picked them all as soon as they bloomed--someone told me people also sell them for a little change. Stangely enough, people don't seem to want the big beautiful yellow and red tulips, just the daffs. So I plant Tetes a Tetes and Minnows, the miniature varieties. No one picks those, and they look very sweet.</DIV>

<DIV><FONT face="Comic Sans MS" size=4>I have seen police stop a woman with hanging pots in a baby stroller. One year we had two stolen from our front porch on Mother's Day. The police said that a witness saw the thief standing on the porch rail to steal them. I hate to think of the lawsuit if he had fallen. I now take an indelible marker to all of the pots and mark them verry visibly "Stolen From (my address)". Not pretty, but have not lost any since then.</FONT></DIV>

<P>So what do people do with these stolen plants? Trade them for drugs? Sell them to a pawn shop? Take back to their own garden to help beautify their community? Give them to the mother-in-law for her birthday?</P>
<P>I know people will steal anything that's not bolted down, but the possibilities of what one does with a stolen plant makes me giggle. If I were a criminal, I'd go for the lawn furniture, grill, or cordless drill before I'd go for a plant.</P>

<DIV>Neighbors on Abell Avenue and probably most of Charles Village should be aware that some one entered a back yard and took a large blooming plant from the back porch. The plant was an pink Australian Impatience. This happened around 10 pm. This was the Abell/Barclay alley, 3100 block.</DIV>

The fact that some one would enter a yard, have to walk a good distance to get on the porch, did it with lights on in the house and the adjoining houses seems really brash. It would help if everyone would be on the lookout.</DIV>
