<DIV>Relatively expensive but with a reliable small stock and a wonderfully informative manager. Peter can and will answer your questions about landscaping, plants, and gardening in general, so if you want to know whether a plant will work in a certain spot or what type of tree to plant, he is your man. Unfortunately, many people know this and will tie him up for hours, especially on weekends. Best to find out which weekdays he works and go then. This nursery will landscape for you, will transport to you and plant a single tree, and does special orders.</DIV>

<DIV><STRONG>Biggest and most visited in the area: Valley View Nurseries, York Road just south of Shawan (off I-83)</STRONG></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Huge and uneven stock, standard prices. Most plants are healthy, but you want to check carefully. The wonderful thing about Valley View is the signage. Every plant is carefully described--sun preference, companion plants, and so forth. Valley View holds a special place in my heart because I literally learned to garden by reading those signs. It also has trees and shrubs galore, many native plants, lots of supplies, and fun garden stuff. The staff can be informative when not overwhelmed, but the place is often VERY crowded on weekends and is very hot in the summer, because much of its stock is on open asphalt.</DIV>

<DIV><STRONG>Cool nursery if you feel like a drive: Kingsdene Nursery, about 5 miles out York Road from Shawan Road.</STRONG></DIV>

<DIV>This nursery is the prettiest one I have seen and has wonderful trees and shrubs. It also carries unusual and attractive perennials, on the theory that because it cannot compete with Valley View, it tries to carry things one might not find elsewhere. Very reliable stock, good prices, specials. Drawback: the staff are not urban gardeners and may not understand the limitations of a tiny urban space.</DIV>

<DIV><STRONG>The alpha and omega: Behnke's Nursery, down on Route 1 near Beltsville. Takes about 35 minutes to get there on I-95.</STRONG></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Acres and acres of plants, shrubs, and trees. Fantastic stock, much of it grown by the nursery itself, and the best place for trees. Very good prices and knowledgeable staff. This is an all-day trip, so start early and wear sturdy walking shoes. Because Behnke's is in zone 7, it carries some plants that are less common in Baltimore. </DIV>

<DIV><STRONG>Best annuals: Radebaugh's on Burke Road near Towson.</STRONG></DIV>

<DIV>Andrea van Arsdale told me about this nursery, which grows its own beautiful annuals. It has a greenhouse full of zonal geraniums and begonias in every color, for example. It also has a discount for cash and carry and very reasonable prices. It's a must-see. The friendly and knowledgeable staff once described to me how, in the huge snowstorm we had a few years back, they stayed up all night clearing snow from the greenhouse roofs to keep them from collapsing. </DIV>

<DIV>I also admit to buying things at Home Depot, Lowe's, Safeway, and anywhere I see healthy-looking, inexpensive plants. You can pick up great shrubs for almost nothing at Home Depot and Lowe's, especially when they start looking a little ragged. And for the truly dedicated among you, the area has many native plant nurseries. You can locate them on line or through the sale at Cylburn Arboretum, as many of them exhibit there. You can also find listings of native plants and nurseries that sell them on line by visiting the site of the Maryland Native Plant Society.</DIV>

<DIV>Each spring the native plant societies and other garden groups get together and sell wonderful native and rare plants. It's very popular, so go early (8 am) and take a wagon or something to carry your treasures.
