               "TURKEY'S ROLE IN INTERNATIONAL POLITICS"
Turkey's assistance in any war against Iraq is important, but
problematic. Perhaps, even more importantly, Turkey is a critical
partner in the war on terrorism. As one considers the state of today's
Islamic world, Turkey as a secular and Islamic state is an interesting
alternative to the model of a religion dominated Islamic state. Its
quest for membership in the European Union is a test of Europe's
definition of itself, and the meaning of Turkey's long-standing military
co-operation with the West. The thinking of the Turkish government about
its national identity, its role in the region and Europe, and its role
in pursuing a stable world order is of enormous interest to the United
States.

We are fortunate to be joined by a definitive voice of Turkey, Dr.
Osman Faruk Logoglu, the Ambassador of Turkey to the United States.

Ambassador Logoglu earned his B.A. degree in Political Science from
Brandeis University in 1963 and his Ph.D. in Political Science from
Princeton University in 1969. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
in 1971. He has been First Secretary at the EEC, posted to Dhaka,
counselor to the Turkish Permanent Delegation at the United Nations in
New York (1980-1984), consul general at the Turkish Consulate General in
Hamburg, Germany , (1986-1989), and ambassador on two previous
occasions: to Denmark from 1993 to 1996, and to Azerbaijan from 1996 to
1998.

Moreover, Ambassador Logoglu held numerous posts at the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs: deputy director general at the Department of Bilateral
Political Affairs in Greece (1989-1993), deputy undersecretary of
political affairs (1998-2000), and most recently undersecretary
(2000-2001). He became Ambassador of Turkey to the United States in
October 2001.

It is a great pleasure and honor to welcome Ambassador Osman Faruk
Logoglu to the Council.
