HGTV to Feature Maryland Historic Tax Credit Success Story

An outstanding example of the success of the Maryland Historic Tax
Credit Program will be featured on HGTV's prestigious Restore America
program, this Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at 8:30 PM and 11:30 PM
on HGTV. The featured home is in the Mount Vernon community of Baltimore
City and relates the story of two Washington DC residents who purchased
a dilapidated office building and restored it to a single-family home using
the
Maryland Historic Tax Credit program.

Not only did this family restore an at-risk building of great historical
significance
(the former home of the Knabe family of piano manufacturers), but also they
are now new taxpayers in the State of Maryland.

The residents of Mount Vernon are joining other historic communities around
the
state, and many outstanding Maryland legislators in opposing SB 203, which
would
immediately end the Historic Tax Credit Program. The program provides a
clear
economic return on the state's investment by attracting new taxpayers to the
state of Maryland and reviving declining neighborhoods so that they are less
dependent on state aid in the future.
