OPERATION AMERICAN FREEDOM
Unplugged political reflection with Mark Crispin
Miller
Today, says Miller, the US mainstream press serves as
a "mere P.A. system for the White House and the
Pentagon, and has therefore absolutely failed its
constitutional duty to inform the people of this
country."
In a brilliant mix of stand-up comedy, critical
analysis and independent news reporting, famed media
critic Mark Crispin Miller takes on all the aspects of
the current crisis in American politics: the
Bush/Cheney kleptocracy, the vitriolic GOP, the craven
Democrats and the all-but-useless mainstream press.
Today, says Miller, the US mainstream press serves as
a "mere P.A. system for the White House and the
Pentagon, and has therefore absolutely failed its
constitutional duty to inform the people of this
country." Miller's powerful show is sure to make you
laugh-and make you mad. "When you leave here tonight,"
he says, "I want you to go out and pick a fight."
This run of Operation American Freedom at the Creative
Alliance's newly renovated Patterson theater is the
show's Baltimore premiere-and a homecoming for Miller.
The author of "The Bush Dyslexicon" and a professor of
media studies at New York University, Miller lived
here from 1971-1977, when he was working for his
doctorate at Johns Hopkins; and again from 1982-1997,
when he taught media studies and non-fiction in JHU's
Writing Seminars. His weekly radio commentaries on
"The Lisa Simeone Show" (on WJHU) were very popular
during their seven-year run (1988-95). Miller also
established and directed a weekly film series at the
Baltimore Museum of Art, bringing in such speakers as
Peter Bogdanovich and Michael Moore.
"Operation American Freedom," directed by Gregory
Keller, and produced by Marc Posnock and Antonio
Soddu, comes to Baltimore after a five-month, almost
entirely sold-out run at the Cherry Lane Theater in
New York City.
The Alternative Press Center, Baltimore Independent
Media Center, and Baltimore News Network (Baltimore
Chronicle & Sentinel) are pleased to be co-sponsors of
this event of the Creative Alliance.
