This is great news about renewable energy for Maryland!

Kathleen and I signed up for a plan from Chesapeake WindCurrent
to supply 25 percent of the power needs of our home from
renewable wind energy. This is even better -- it means that
within 10 years, BGE will be purchasing 7.5 percent of its
energy needs from renewable wind sources.

Maryland Enters Clean Energy Era: Conservative Republican Governor Signs
Landmark Bill

Renewable Energy Bill Represents Biggest Step Maryland Has Taken Against
Global Warming and Air Pollution

(ANNAPOLIS) - Conservative Republican Governor Robert Ehrlich signed a
landmark clean energy bill into law today, marking the single biggest
step Maryland has ever taken in the fight against global warming and air
pollution.

The bill (HB 1308/SB869) will reduce the use of polluting fossil fuels
such as coal, oil and natural gas by requiring that at least 7.5% of the
state's electricity come from renewable sources by 2014. Today's bill
signing caps an intensive three-year grassroots campaign in support of
the measure. The Clean Energy Partnership, the Chesapeake Climate Action
Network, MaryPIRG and others led the charge.

"Today in Annapolis the people of Maryland, our children and future
generations won a monumental victory in our quest for a cleaner, safer
world free of the threat of global warming," said Clean Energy
Partnership Director Gary Skulnik. "The Clean Energy Bill is the biggest
single step Maryland can take towards a brighter future."

The bill was championed by House Speaker Michael Busch, Majority Leader
Kumar Barve, Economic Committee Chair Derrick Davis and Delegate Jim
Hubbard on the House side. In the Senate, it was sponsored by Sen.
Thomas Middleton. It won strong bi-partisan support in both houses.

"The Clean Energy Bill has something for everyone - it will clean up our
environment, lower our dependence on fossil fuels, improve energy
security, and create jobs and economic development in western Maryland,"
added Mike Tidwell, director of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network.
"House Speaker Busch showed genuine vision and leadership by making the
Clean Energy Bill a top priority and backing it with his political
weight."

Maryland will join just 14 other states that have a renewable energy
mandate. The bill was supported by a broad coalition that included the
state's largest electric utilities, more than a hundred businesses, as
well as faith, health, and labor activists.
