[Chat] Rats galore

I have mixed rat poison pellets with dirty cat litter--nuggets removed--and
poured it down rat holes. Place a large rock or concrete thing on top. The
cat scent "troubles" the critters.

Years ago I remember someone suggesting smoke bombs....things you put down
rat holes. Ever heard of such things?

I am fed up with the rats in my back yard! I have had in an exterminator
($125 and no help, even with tracking powder in the rat burrow), but the
rats keep tearing up the yard. In desperation, I have put down a mixture of
fox and bobcat urine peddled by Gardener's Supply and also have taken to
letting Ajax the Ratter Warrior (my big black-and-white tom) out into the
yard whenever he sees something through the window. Since instituting this
regime, I have seen only two rats in the yard--one dead one in Ajax's teeth,
and one live one racing out under the gate. But I know they are still there,
because they keep burrowing out entrances under the fence.

More seriously, has anyone else found a way to reduce the rat population
near the houses? I know that we need to clean up the alley, but that is a
long-term solution. I'm looking for something immediate.

Emily

NB Normally I don't let my cats catch rats, though some of our alley cats
do--rats harbor diseases. Shows how desperate I am . . .

Subject: [Chat] 35% off at Gordon's Bookseller

The Gordon's Bookseller store at the Rotunda is going out of business, and
there's 35 percent off the entire stock. There's still a lot there, like
ADC maps, scattered best sellers and Harry Potter's, a lot of the history
section, and so on. Their lease expires at the end of March. They are also
selling their fixtures.

I also noticed that the shoe store across the hall and the yogurt/coffee
shop closed. It's a shame to see even more stores close over there.
