I would call the guy who did your home inspection, or someone from a home inspection company. They don't have a vested interest in getting any contracting work for you. I have hired such folks to help me diagnose problems in my house. It's worth the $100 it might cost you. Good Luck, Dawna

Subject: [Chat] Whom to call if garage wall collapsing?

The south wall on my garage appears to be in dire shape. It has been separating from the roof and the west wall at the top (the space is now several inches), and the brick is cracked through in two spots. The roof and the other walls seem to be OK.

The problem is that someone bashed in my garage door, and it has to be replaced. Home Depot has agreed to replace it, but I am concerned that the work could disturb the shaky wall, potentially causing a scenario I don't want to think about with workmen inside the garage.

What kind of a specialist do I need to assess the damage and properly repair the wall? One contractor has looked at it, but I am not sanguine about his assessment (use a lot of mortar to bung it back together). I would appreciate any advice.

Many thanks.

Emily
