Hello, everyone,

Some time back when I met Janet Levine's husband Ethan
at a meeting, I learned that he is the head of an organization
that manages astronomical observatories for a coalition
of universities. Here's a press release that I found
on the web telling about his job. This is pretty cool.

Ethan J. Schreier Assumes Presidency of Associated Universities, Inc.

On October 22nd, at the conclusion of the Annual Meeting of the Board
of Trustees of Associated Universities, Inc., Dr. Ethan J. Schreier
formally assumed his responsibilities as President of the
corporation. Dr. Schreier was selected in the Spring of this year (see
http://www.aui.edu/press/2004may03.html) to be successor to
Dr. Riccardo Giacconi, who retired from the presidency after having
served as President for more than five years. Associated Universities,
Inc. (AUI) is headquartered in Washington, DC, and operates the
National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) under a cooperative
agreement with the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Schreier has been a member of the AUI Corporate Staff since
November, 2001, while on leave from the Space Telescope Science
Institute in Baltimore, MD, most recently serving as AUI's Executive
Vice President. Dr. Schreier and his wife, Dr. Janet Levine, reside in
Baltimore.

Prof. H. Warren Moos, Gerhard H. Dieke Professor of Physics and
Astronomy at The Johns Hopkins University, who assumed the
Chairmanship of the AUI Board of Trustees at the conclusion of the
Annual Meeting, expressed the Board's appreciation for Dr. Giacconi's
leadership and vision as President and also acknowledged the Board's
gratitude to Prof. Martha P. Haynes, Goldwin Smith Professor of
Astronomy at Cornell University, who concluded four years of service
as the AUI Board Chair.

Dr. Schreier expressed his sincere thanks to his predecessor and to
the outgoing Chair who helped NRAO get started constructing its new
flagship facilities -- the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and
the Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) -- even as it was completing the
Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT).

He added that he is looking forward to working with the Board and its
new Chair, with the National Science Foundation, and with the entire
NRAO staff in successfully completing and operating these new
facilities for the astronomy community.
