  As most of you know, the Homewood Meeting is a supporter of the Govans Ecumenical Development Corporation (GEDCO), which provides those in need in northeast Baltimore with emergency food and financial assistance.   As you may know, GEDCO’s CARES program is a beneficiary of the Feinstein Challenge, a program meant to encourage giving to programs that help feed hungry people in our community.  We are hoping that you will consider doing a food drive, having a special collection, encourage giving (personal and organizational) to GEDCO during the months of March and April by publicizing the Feinstein Challenge in your newsletters, bulletin or on your listserv.   Here are a few more details about the Feinstein Challenge (which you are free to replicate for your publications):
   
  Blurb:
  For the ninth straight year, Alan Shawn Feinstein will divide $1 million among hunger fighting agencies nationwide using it to help them raise funds during March and April 2006.  The program runs from March 1st until April 30th.  All cash and food received during this period will count toward the challenge.  Food items will be valued at $1.00 per item for reporting purposes.  
   
  Asked why he is doing this, Mr. Feinstein said, “Why am I doing this?  Because I believe each of us was put here on the earth to do what we can to help those in need.  I hope you believe that too.”  He went on to say ”my money started this campaign but it is YOU who will help decide how many needy people in your city will be fed this year.  I’m only here to give you some support and to remind you of something I know you hold dear: That all that will matter to us someday is what we did while we were here to help those who needed us.”
   
  Please support the CARES program now by organizing a food drive, holding a special collection and/or by making a gift to GEDCO today.  Your generosity will allow us to receive additional funds through the Feinstein Challenge.  We encourage your support!
