Subject: FYI - Seton renovations

All:

Please forward the following info to interested parties.

I wanted to bring you up to date on JHU-related activity at
Seton Building, located at the corner of 28th and North Charles
Streets. A summary of the project follows:

The historic Seton Building, acquired by The Johns Hopkins
University in 2003, was built in 1908 and is located on the
southwest corner of 28th and North Charles Streets. The
building, who's interior and exterior historical integrity will
be retained, will be principally occupied by office and
classroom space. Renovations to the building commenced earlier
this month (Aug. '05).

The building consists of 73,000 gross square feet arranged on
four flexible floors with a partial ground level. The three
primary floors are arranged in a U configuration with an
interior oriented corridor system connected to a two-story
courtyard and an elevator/stair/restroom core added as part of a
1989 renovation. The building has an historic fabric including a
central, grand wood stairway, a two-story chapel with stained
glass windows, natural wood paneling, doorways with operable
glass transoms and wood moldings.

Interior work has begun. The porches will be removed from the
exterior of the building on or about the week of August 8, 2005,
due to safety concerns related to their structural integrity.
The porches will be rebuilt to capture their historic character,
per the Maryland Historic Trust. The retaining wall on Maryland
Ave. will be repaired as a part of the project. The parking lot
will be upgraded, including enhancing security provisions.

The facility will house office spaces for JHU's School for
Professional Studies in Business and Education (SPSBE), The
Johns Hopkins University Press, and the Milton S. Eisenhower
Library. SPSBE adult education classes will be conducted in the
late afternoon and evening.

Construction will take place between August, 2005, and February
2006, and occupancy of the building will occur between January
of 2006 and March of 2006.

Additional information is also available in a recent JHU Gazette
article, which can be found at
