[Chat] [WIA] Recycling styrofoam?

I take cardboard boxes and styrofoam of all types to Flash Mail where it is reused for packing items people bring in for shipping.

Put packing ‘peanuts,’ about four inches deep in a large pot, then cover them with landscape fabric. Fill the rest of the pot with soil and plant roses or hibiscus. This is wonderful drainage for these large plants and keeps the pot from being so heavy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (tip from reader Ethel H., [log in to unmask]">[log in to unmask])

    Use packing peanuts or pieces of EPS for light-weight drainage in the bottom of hanging planters.  

I have done all of the above and found ot really makes the pots much lighter - I usually skip the landscape fabric and let the soil fill in around the peanuts.  Just is a pain when transplanting.

  You can do your part in NOT supporting the styrofoam market in little ways, by telling others and also by not purchasing styrofoam cups at the store.
  If you are going to get supplies for a picnic or something... GET PAPER CUPS!  Even if they don't end up getting recycled, at least they are biodegradable.
  There are some, more environmentally conscious companies using packing peanuts made from corn.
  Check the peanuts you have out:
  Get your finger wet and then touch one, or pick it up...
  Then smell it. If it smells like popcorn, they are the biodegradable kind!  YAY!
  You can actually use them in your compost!
  Or throw them away.  If they are the corn ones, at least they'll degrade.
